Is a Universities brand important if you want to study marketing there?
Having originally studied at Bristol University, I am now looking to start another course this year, but I am struck by how university brands have developed. Bristol's website does not seem to be very appealing, however, other universities such as Southampton have very slick websites and brands.
Should this influence my choice?? Does it reflect how professional, successful or aware a university is? As it is a marketing course I want to do, should I choose a university that knows how to market their brand well? Has it influcenced your choice?
Thinking about Gloucestershire for a CIM course - anyone have any thoughts about how they present themselves?
Sorry for all the questions - just want to make sure I make the right choice!

No.
No.
No.
No.
Just because they have spent more money or time on marketing does not mean that the department teaching marketing will be any good.
I would contact undergraduate lecturers and they will pretty much list the best departments to study the subject in the country. Then just follow their advice. -

Thanks... I know some Universities have worked with students and Alumni to produce their brand in conjunction with an agency, such as Plymouth University, and that type of opportunity plus access to good brand agencies for placements through universities partnerships is key for me. I will contact a few lecturers and find out.

Re: Is a Universities brand important if you want to study marketing there?
I'm confused how someone could come to the conclusion that the amount of effort expended by the website/advertising/recruitment/whatever they call 'the people that design the website to appeal to students' departments reflects how good the entirely separate marketing course department will be...

Re: Is a Universities brand important if you want to study marketing there? Are you saying it purely to provoke a reaction, or do you genuinely believe that the RG represents the best universities in the UK?(Original post by 123maz)

Re: Is a Universities brand important if you want to study marketing there?Thank you for recognising my status.(Original post by 123maz)

But the RG universities aren't necessarily the best (we'll try to ignore 'best' being subjective for the moment.) It's a group of universities that conduct a lot of research; there are plenty of universities generally held to be among the best that aren't in the RG (Durham, as one example) ... and some in the RG are nothing special (Sheffield, Southampton... Good universities, but when you think of the creme de la creme of UK universities, you probably don't think of them.)
And it's very debatable how useful a university being heavily involved in research is to an undergraduate student, with some arguments that it may even be detrimental. -

i was being sarcastic but, i will also be subjective about you being a 'legend'.
im just saying what i have been told. I myself will be going into my first year of sixth form so my knowledge of the best universities isnt as vast as a 'legends'
