Obviously we lack, to my knowledge, any effective way to returning fire against a fleet of ships firing at us from orbit, their technology may not be way more advanced then ours. It depends on how they discovered their propulsion system. I mean look at Earth, some areas have fancy tech, some are 3rd world without electricity. What ever allows for FTL travel could have been discovered by their people when they were at a similar level of technology to us, we've had many ingenious people discover many crucial aspects of physics, chemistry etc.(Original post by Gwilym101)
Either way it wouldn't matter as if aliens did reach earth their technology would be some much more advanced than ours they could do whatever they wanted to us.
An individual on their world could have made a breakthrough that we haven't been able to as we've just not happened on that discovery yet, hell the principles could have been discovered by accident by that race when they were studying something else, lots of things are discovered when the original aim of research was something different.
Anyways...no we wouldn't welcome them in general, especially in these economic times. It does depend on the context though, if they're fleeing to Earth to seek asylum from a war we have no knowledge of, our governments would aid them (assuming they hand over all their tech) but the common people would complain if governments pooled money into building the creatures their own city, giving them resources etc.
If they immigrated as they wanted to help us improve our way to life, although a significant number would resent them, I think they would be more warmly welcomed, especially if they shared their technology and had cures for common diseases (cancer, AIDS, alzheimers etc). -

The US government did get rid of Qadaffi & Sadaam. They saved many lives in that process. I do not agree with war. The US government are like the Worldwide Police force. If they do get involved they're criticized, if they do not get involved people accuse them of allowing the injustice to continue. Most Americans hate their government as well i may add.

americans help electing a president for a country and that president has to lick americas ass...the minute like qadaffi or saddam they go against america...america goes on media and chats so much **** against saddam and qadaffi that people actually believe that they are the bad people...then america go into the country and say we are heroes come to save your city....and the people in the country belive americans saved thier ass when americans created the problem then resolved it themself... -

Maybe we would be able to see that we are a small population in terms of the entire universe and we should stop waging war on each other because of how ridiculous it is. Unfortunately due to how divided we are as a planet I feel that some people may not have the same attitude that I do and they may act hostile towards our visitors.
Or they could land and absolutely destroy our planet and kill us all.
