    I have a silly questiom
    Hi
My silly question is, should I wear formal or informal in the university? I am going to be in a postgraduate course.
Sorry again but I haven't been in the UK before. I used to wear jeans all the time in the US but I am not sure how things work in the UK.

    Thanks

Informal - just dress as you normally would!

(I'm not at Birmingham, but it's true of all UK universities. Nobody will think anything of how you're dressed anyway - I've heard of people turning up to lectures in pyjamas because they were running late. :p:)

Things will be very formal at post-graduate universities. One must drink port at regular intervals and a suit/tie is expected. If you are a women a dress (above Knee length) will be expected. One may on rare occasions (the lord's sabbath) wear jeans aslong as one maintains the "smart" look.

But for all intents and purpouses, one must always be seen to be looking smart unless specifically requested otherwise.

I've worn my bear costume for many years and had no repercussions.

There seem to be a fair number of idiots on this thread, so be careful.

Even for post-grad, informal will be fine. Jeans and t-shirt tends to be normal. As long as it's not gratuitously offensive, it'll be fine!

If you've got a big meeting with your supervisor or a presentation to do (especially if you're teaching) however, you may want to smarten up a bit (wear a collared shirt etc) but by no means formal!

Just don't show up naked. It gets cold sometimes.

the only silly question is the one not asked!
im off to uni too this year and im going to wear what i feel like as i do in typical life, the majority of people in the uk wear jeans too, but there are some individuals that are more comfy wearing smart, its all individualised afterall we are a westernised society.

esse quam videri (be your self )

well nams welcome to the UK and have the best of times on your course

Wear informal, i suppose casual clothing is best. Your clothes are not of importance it's more your education

Universities HERE are very informal. Even lots of the academics wear jeans!

There might be the odd formal event you have the chance to go to (and these are almost certainly optional) but on a day to day basis most students dress very casually. I plan to live in jeans for the next three years

One of my lecturers won "Most Stylish Lecturer" award at our Summer Ball thing and then the next day he proceeded to come in wearing Sunglasses, a leather jacket that was about 20 years old and high waist jeans and the mock medal he'd been given. He's brilliant :')

I prefer to wear ass-less chaps to class. When the seat is cold, it keeps you awake.

Yes but people are hardly going to go up to them and say: "Why on earth have you got that reindeer outfit on for? I am absolutely appalled, I care about this deeply......." lol
