The Earth would be far better off without humans.
Does anyone else think the Earth would be far better off without humans? No other species does horrible things such as industrialising no other species build hideous nuclear weapons. No other species follow religions the majority of which are hateful monotheistic religions more than polytheistic. I think its fair to say humanity is a virus with shoes.

The Earth doesn't care if there are humans on it or not.

    Someone's been watching The Matrix

Humanity isn't the problem, people are. It gets a bit 'greenpeace' but if we stopped beating the **** out of each other then this wouldn't be such a problem. It is easily possible to live sustainably on this planet, as a species, just a lot of adults would lose their 'get rich quick' industries.

This. 'Better' according to whom? Animals couldn't care less and the planet isn't sentient.

I feel that there are certainly a large amount of people who do not deserve to live on this planet due to the terrible things that they have done. Why cant we just al get along and not do such stupid things like building nuclear weapons and waging war on each other.:hippie:

I'm not sure about the Earth's emotional wellbeing, but I am becoming ever more of a misanthrope (or, to coin a term, misbie), so I do think that sentient life is generally a bad development (even though we're evolutionarily programmed to think otherwise). There's quite an interesting, though depressing, philosophical book which adumbrates this line of reasoning here: http://books.google.co.uk/books/abou...d=-6UbHqrdWy4C

There's also a group devoted to "voluntary human extinction", whose website is a good read even if only for entertainment or shock value: http://www.vhemt.org/

Yes animals do care considering people are destroying many animal habitats per day. I have never seen the Matrix. Humans could lie sustainably but considering that humans have for the last thousand years been more and more destructive they need to start soon. As for the "bloody treehugger" is that supposed to be a insult I regard it as a compliment trees are vital to the environment and should be given as much as people so should animals.

Nature would be better off without modern day humans, stone age human fitted in quite well though IMO.

Regardless that it doesn't care about us... it still could mean that the Earth would be better off without us. The two are not mutually exclusive.

What is 'better' for the Earth though? The only things you could come up with are framed in human terms- less pollution or more forests or whatever. Why would that matter for the Earth?

How about because less pollution means less damage to the Earth. And more forests = more habitats and also trees reduce the amount of harmful gasses.

You're probably right. But I still think us humans are pretty cool in many ways.

The Earth doesn't have feelings. Besides no matter what humans do, the world will regenerate itself. It's been done many times in the past.

it probably would, but I think our impact is probably exaggerated a lot.

No our impact is in fact hushed down partly because of parasetic big industries. And partly because of human arrogance and an unwillingness to accept the truth because it is uncomfortable.

I think you could make an argument that the animal kingdom would be better off without humans, but then it would also be better off without mosquitoes. I don't think we really have to justify our existence; nature is one giant fight for survival, we're just a lot more capable of doing massive damage than sharks, bears and crocodiles. At least however we are the one animal that is capable of guilt and a conscience about any damage that we do; sharks chomp through surfers and don't (and can't) really give a crap.
