An off-peak, return with 1 month ticket would cost £77.90 for that route.

The singles you are seeing are known as 'advanced singles'. Buying two advanced singles can often work out cheaper than buying a return.

I can see an advanced single to Newcastle for £32 and back to Liverpool for £26.50 as the cheapest tickets for those days. Making a total price of £58.50, a considerable saving.
Hurry though the cheap tickets go fast, and once they are gone, they are gone.

Also, if you travel often look into a railcard. This will make your tickets 1/3rd cheaper.

Try looking at http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/ for good deals. Obviously you won't go on a first train, but you can still book tickets there with no fees.

If these are too expensive try National Express or Megabus.

    Have fun

There are also student only car share sites for long distances. I got a lift for free from Newcastle to London. studentrides.co.uk is a good one
