I'm in oil & gas myself, and I've noticed that for a geo type role, a masters is often either strongly preferred or essential, so I'm not too surprised that you haven't managed to get very far with just a bachelors.
thanks for the thumbs up mate . Good to know it won't be an utter waste of time! Quick question on the job front. I want do do a job that involves lots of traveling, as such I was looking into become an acquisition geophysicist. Do you know what companies employ or allow graduates to do a lot of such acquisition work? In particular do you know any firms which which I'd be able to abseil off cliffs, climb mountains etc to take geophysical readings? I want to do work in an extreme environment, one in which I can use my climbing skills .

Personally I don't. The geophysicists and geologists I know all work in offices. The only people I know who don't work in offices in the oil industry are mechanical and electrical engineers.

is it difficult for a petroleum geophysicist to train to be a petroleum engineer at a later stage? I read somewhere it's not since the courses are very similar, but what about in reality? I read into reservoir engineering and think it's something I may want to do at some stage. It was really tough choosing between petroleum geophysics and petroleum engineering but I went for geophysics cos i didn't like the economics modules imperial make you do if you do petroleum engineering :P. The Pet geophys course is perfect for me :P

I'm seeing the masters as an exercise of intellectual stimulation. Not bothered if i get a job at the end of it. I want to do it as opposed to another year of data admin . If i get a job, great, if not, i'll do some TA work. Lots of people after maths teachers/teaching assistants. I'm too chilled out to stress to be honest. I'm just going with the flow and seeing where life takes me . A bit naive? Perhaps, but life is too short to waste it worrying, doing a dead end job forever until I "may get lucky".
Seriously? You're surprised you're not getting a good job with this attitude?

You've got a limited window tbh. Don't waste time and money on a masters unless you really need it. Use the money to support yourself through a relevant internship, will take you much further IMO.

i've not been able to get through to that stage even! I dropped out of uni and then had a gap year then did uni and then had a gap year, and then started looking for grad jobs. I have a feeling all these years out and my old age (25) are putting people off. What do you reckon?
more likely that your CV isn't particularly good...

Re: the 2:1 thread, still cant get a job???
Graduated 2 years ago in Criminology and Sociology, attained a 2:1. Still working at a crappy supermarket, which I absolutely deteste and have been stuck doing for almost 5 years. I managed to scrap a lil Receptionist position at the beginning of the year with crappy unsociable hours. So I am currently working 18hrs across 2 jobs. In an ideal world I would love to work in the CPS/Courts, but that unfortunately is a no go, so I am trying HR! I have applied to job after job after job, I don't even get as much of an interview; i'm convinced something is wrong with my CV, but I take it to several people so they can look at it, and everytime I get told ''Its crap, its boring, do it this way'', and it still makes no damn difference whatsoever!

Very very fed up, as at the age of 26 I thought I would have at least been settled in a job, and on my way to finding a place of my own....nope hasn't worked out that way! I wish I never bothered going to uni tbh!

Have you tried the CV help forum on here? Looks like a very useful service, can't hurt to have a go.

BTW have you been looking at graduate schemes or regular jobs? Either way, try the other

I will give the CV help forum a try and see if that helps - I'm just fed up of changing my CV; 7 versions I have! :/

Grad. schemes = have to come back in the Autumn where they will reopen again for 2013 intake, only trouble is, I cannot take working at the supermarket any longer, and desperately need to get out before I go stir crazy! Right now anything that is mon-fri full time hours that actually gets my brain working will be good to me, just not a damn supermarket.

When you post your cv in the cv forum, they always give out the same reply to everyone. It is not even foucussed on your cv. I did not find it that helpful.

We don't give the same reply to everyone, but before we can get into the specific details of an individual CV, the CV has to be basically sound. But 90% of CVs are not fit for purpose when they are first uploaded. So there is a standard, detailed answer given, with a template, to get the CV going in the right direction. Then if people have further questions, they can come back and ask and they frequently do.

You didn't come back and ask for any further specific help.

I think my CV's sound. I've got dozens of tailored CV's. I even checked my cv's through with a ucl careers advisor who said it was perfect and that i was just unlcky with the jobs front. He asked me to try find unadvertised jobs.

My key advice is to be positive and believe you will get a job.

I achieved a 2:1 last year and only landed a job after 11 months. What let me down was lack of relevant experience was working in retail whole at college and uni .

Do not give up and if you can try really hard to get relevant work experience that will differentiate you from hundreds of other applicants.
