Applying to different courses at one university.
    Hi.

I am not applying to universities at the moment , in fact i am just starting A-levels this September. But i already researching my options. As i know you can apply to 5 courses. So my questions are:

    1) Can you apply to different courses at one university? (For example, Economics and Philosophy AND just Economics at LSE)
    2) Can you apply to different courses specifically at Oxbridge ? (For example, PPE AND Economics and Management at Oxford)

And the last and the most important question:

    3) Will two courses within one university occupy two of my five options in UCAS or will they occupy only one since they are within one university ?

Also if you have experience in applying to several courses in one university please share it here.

Yeah, you can apply to different courses at the same University, preferably related like you've said. I applied for 3 courses at my chosen University (English Lang + Creative Writing, English Lit + Creative Writing, and English Language + Linguistics), I got an offer for English Lang + Creative Writing and they put 'Unsuccessful' for the other two. So, yes it's possible.
    Not sure about Oxbridge.
And no, they don't occupy one option. Each different course is one option, so in my case, I only had 2 other options for different universities. I wasn't too bothered anyway as my 3 choices were for the uni I definitely wanted to go to, so you'd have to be sure really.

Many universities will only consider one of your options though and give you an automatic rejection for the other, which sort of seems like a waste of a choice. You'd also need to consider the fact your PS should suit all your choices and if you apply to more than one course, the university will know and it makes it seem you're not dedicated to the one (or joint) subject(s).

Very interesting information. One questions: if at one university i apply to Economics and at another i apply to PPE or Economics and Philosophy , what should i do in this case in terms of PS ?

Ideally, all your choices should be the same subject combination (just about) otherwise you're taking a risk. The admission tutor at the one where you're only applying for economics will be thinking "why is this guy talking about philosophy/politics too when he's applying for straight economics?". They will understand you'll be applying for PPE elsewhere, but that gives the impression you're not really interested in the straight economics course you've applied for, putting you in a bad light.

Not necessarily I applied for two different courses at one uni and got an offer from both of them. Its helpful to do that if you are certain what uni you want to attend but are unsure of the course as I was.

As I said, 'many' universities will do that.

My bad I misread that. I blame a lack of sleep.

    1) Yes you can do that, though different Universities with treat them differently (though a friend of mine applied to Exeter for both Geography and Environmental Sciences and got in to both)

    2) No you cannot apply for more than one subject at Oxbridge

    3) The two courses will fill up two spaces on your UCAS, it's done by course not by insitution.

Only 1 of your 5 choices can be an Oxbridge choice(?) Also, I hear that LSE will only ever give someone one offer, so I would just apply for one course there - the one your PS is most relevant to so you can give the strongest application in.

On another note, some guy here (forgot the username) used up 4/5 choices, got rejected for straight Econ at LSE before the January deadline, added Econ/EconHist at LSE as a 5th choice and got an offer for that. It worked for them, but I don't know if I would purposefully hold out a place like that. If your application was not good enough for the first subject then there's a great chance that it's not going to be good enough for the second, and also LSE can take an age to get back to you so you may not hear back before January. :p:
