oh well we all have our annoying little habits

Still, I'd say it's pretty clear that he's intended to be a highly eccentric character.

I say Sherlock, but this is purely because of Jeremy Brett.

In addition to the whole drug thing he shoots at walls, beats up dead pigs, and writes lengthy treatises about tobacco ash - that's not exactly normal.
however all in the name of science! and it's so random and funny!

    This would be amazing!!!
He would be the only actor ever to age with the role.

If you want to read about it:

    This is also interesting:

Clearly Benedict has forgotten this line: "It's not as though Sherlock Holmes felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler". I do love the possibility though.

thank you!!! and it was more a mutual respect for her intelligence was it not, although he does feel emotion he suppresses it, as he does not feel the need to waste energy and time on worthless pursuits, but he respects Watson for being a doctor and being able to stand him, Irene was one of the only people to outsmart him, I wonder if it has anything to do with Sherlock' parents as to why he and his brother are so shut off?

yeah i think that she was the first woman whom he really respected, at least in the original story. He sees love as a distraction from work and something only experienced by people "lower" than himself.
It would be interesting to see what the holmes brothers said to their mum to upset her so much, i think it was mentioned in a study in pink.

You should check out his twitter accouint sometime, his "tweets" are quite hilarious

Sure, i just mean that his eccentricities are charicatured somewhat in the series...not that thats a bad thing. I love Cumberbatch's interpretation of Sherlock.

No, I may have seen a few but I don't remember them clearly (I think they were in black and white or just old). I might watch them over the summer holidays then .

Oh, sorry, looks like I misunderstood you, then. I was just talking about the stories - I've never actually seen the series.

    Sherlock, in my opinion.

I find Arthur Conan Doyle's writing style preferable to Agatha Christie's.

Indeed, and the fact he didn't enjoy it as much toward the end show's really what a great writer he was, loyal to his fans until the end!
