    Internet
    Hello people !
I was wondering what kind of rules are
to be kept in mind while using internet in the university accommodation.
I mean is there any data usage limit?
And what kind of speed one gets?

You get 10mb/s default with ask4. There is no data usage limits. Using more than one device at a time costs 1 for 4 more devices. Yu can get up to 100mb/s though this costs money. The 10 mb/s is free

the 10mbps is more than sufficient.. Without being too technical, halls of residence typically employ their own private "grid" with commercial-level infrastructure and bandwidth.. So unlike a private house where you'll typically see 10% of the speed you pay for, in Maple Bank I reliably saw real world download speeds (from game updates etc) of 8-12mbps with the free ask4 broadband that came with my room.

re: illegal torrents / porn. The latter I never had a problem with.. Many a long day in the library would end with a visit to youpr0n.com on my return. I never used torrents (thinking I'd get in the sh!t), but others used them prolifically without issue.. As with all illegal downloading - it tends to be the idiots that then upload said material that get flagged / caught.

Oh and the speed for games was epic. Ping never went above 15 in cod4, css, tf2 etc.

this makes me happy, I wasn't sure how I'd cope a year with no adult adventures online haha, also it sounds like it's better than my home net so thats a plus!

Ask4 only ban things that are illegal in the country you are in. So torrents are fine, provided its not copyrighted material. I assume the latter works as its not illegal under the uk.

I torrented for the best part of a year and never had any problems. Ask4 didn't block TPB either.

Internet is pretty good although mine did cut off randomly sometimes.

On a side note, the internet in Selly Oak (where everyone lives in Second year) is massively oversubscribed so the speed is terrible. I've heard of people on 30MB Virgin getting 0.1Mbps Download speed at peak times
