American milkshake style parlour - focus group
Hi guys, I have recently had an idea to open an American style diner in my home town of Manchester, similar to the one shown in the cult film 'Pulp Fiction'.
If i were to open a diner in this style, is there anything you would like to see? What interior design would appeal to you? Any comments, questions, or personal experiences of diner's of this nature would be much appreicated.Last edited by elliotelliotelliot; 06-07-2012 at 09:40. -

Ample parking.
Some nice and exciting period decoration though not necessarily American.
A good selection of burgers including a few big sized ones for novelty reasons.
Some excellent pies for desert
Excellent service levels, something that is very usual in an American diner. -

It's a very good idea, but seems very similar to Tinseltown who are apparently looking to expand further north. The only real way you could stand out from them is by having much better priced products, as they are pretty well known for being slightly pricey.

You gotta have apple pie on offer, proper burgers, chips in a basket with paper, red and white straws, a jukebox maybe?, strawberry milkshakes, and club sandwiches. All scream American diner to me. And sundaes, brownies with ice cream, and syrup on stuff

amazing reponses guys, much appreciated. I guess i need to find me own niche in the market and find something different to your stereotypical american diner.
What kind of milkshakes would appeal to you guys? How about a 'create-your-own-shake' service - where you choice your filling/topping to accompany your meal? -
Re: American milkshake style parlour - focus groupYou could try something similar to shaketastics menu. Redirect here http://www.shaketasticbars.com/menu/index.html . Tinselton have limited types of milkshakes you can have where as with a menu like this you can have pretty much whatever you want. It works well in my area. They are very overpriced though.(Original post by elliotelliotelliot)

Seeing as it is a milkshake bar, as shown in the picture, give it a proper 'bar' look where the seats are located (hence being able to see the workers blend up the smoothies and milkshakes lol).
It's worth pointing out that this business will be alot stronger in the summer and spring period as opposed to winter.....
Also, run a membership for your bar where members get a 20% discount or something. a 20% discount should suffice.
I've subscribed to this thread, just thought it would be interesting to see how this project of yours progresses. -
Re: American milkshake style parlour - focus group
I think a bar/retro/traditional style theme would really add to the atmosphere of the place and help to retain customers.
Milkshakes and sundaes would be my main focus point, with aims to expand to classic american tastes such as cheeseburgers, steaks, club sandwiches and ribs.
I really do believe there is a niche for this kind of market, not only in the north-west but all over the country. -
Re: American milkshake style parlour - focus group
Banana-peanut butter shakes!!!

I reckon; big burgers, fries cooked in beef fat, ribs in BBQ sauce, rotisserie chicken, buffalo wings with different levels of hot, waitresses in cute short dresses
Something that would be amazing would be free refills on soda.

A place like this recently opened up near me. Have a look at these criticisms as its very easy to come across as a cheap knock off not very well done diner, it needs a lot of attention to every detail, but if you think you can pull it off then I applaud you as this country needs good places to eat which their aren't anymore.
