Do I need a Laptop for med school (Mac)???
Do I need a laptop at med school as apposed to a desktop? Do you use a computer much at uni? and can you just do your computer work where you live? I have a macbook pro (laptop) ATM but I need to upgrade for my music production hobby.

The reason I want a desktop (iMac) is because you get so much more for your money. If I get one, would it be sensible to get a netbook as well? Or even an iPad? Or do I really need a laptop?

    Cheers.

There is a thread posted relatively recently here that may be worth looking at.

You have a Macbook Pro (i.e., a rather powerful machine that should be perfect for music production) and want to spend a ton of cash upgrading?

    OK.

If you don't intend to move your laptop out your room, definitely go for a desktop machine to get more value for money spec-wise. You definitely do not need a laptop.

For medical school you only really need an internet browser, word processor and powerpoint to cover everything on a PC.

if you want more for your money, don't get a mac at all.

your current macbook is more than enough for medicine, whether you carry it around with you or not.

I'm going to medical school next year and I bought an iMac this year for music production, which I'm going to take with me. As I'll need something to use on the go I have an iPad too. I figured I'd probably only really need an internet browser, word processor and powerpoint equivalent from a laptop anyway and those can all be done pretty well on an iPad anyway; plus there are some really good medical apps for iOS that you can't get on desktops (or at least not cheaply).

Hi, I've just gone into my third year of med school and can confirm you'll need at least a core i7 ivy bridge CPU with 16gb of RAM and the equivalent of a GTX690 in your laptop. They are the minimum specifications provided by my med school.

Ok, thanks everyone (except hippysnake), and sorry for the late reply. You've helped me make my decision to get an iMac, then an iPad.

iMacs are very nice, although I think a better mix might be a laptop, a monitor, and if you like you can get a tablet as well. That way you'd be covered for pretty much all eventualities.

Oh, a pad a and a pencil might come in handy too
