Best Decade for Music since 1900? Poll included
..Inspired by the very unbalanced 'greatest band of all time' thread.
So, what in your opinion has been the best decade for music post 1900?
It's very hard for me to decide, but personally I'm going for the 1960s. So many ground-breaking artists that undoubtedly changed popular music for the better. I'm also a huge fan of some of the psychedelic music that emerged particularly in Britain during the late 1960s so that obviously factored into my decision.
For simplicity's sake I included music pre 1950s all under one option in the poll as I didn't think the separate decades would be too popular. If you're a particular fan of the early blues then that option would be the one for you! -
Re: Best Decade for Music since 1900? Poll includedFair enough, I can see your point. I think that the 60s do get overrated in terms of sheer musical quality but there's no denying that it was probably the most influential on later popular music.
It was a really hard decision for me to make because I love various genres of music throughout the decades; 60's pop and psychedelia, 70s punk and some of the early metal/rock, 80s Post Punk, 90s shoegaze and some of the Britpop era and there is still some great stuff since the noughties IMO.

it had incredible music (Beatles, Miles Davis, Hendrix) and changed how music was made more so than any other decade but in terms of musical content I just prefer the 90s.
90s > 00s >60s >70s = 80s, but this decade's shaping up pretty well. I don't think I can compare it to the others though. -

I'd go for this tbh, the 90s was just so active artistically, so many different genres and pioneering sounds came from that period. The 60s prob comes second tho
Though most people will talk personal preference and so many will vote 70s even though i don't believe it had the amount of diversity the 90s or even the 60s had. -

90s or 00s.
Anyone that says otherwise simply hasn't explored music well enough.
After that I'd go 70s > 80s > 60s.
Most people that claim the 60s were some kinda golden age only seem to know The Beatles, Dylan, The Rolling Stones and the like.Last edited by concubine; 06-07-2012 at 17:27. -

Personally, the 1980s.
One of the reasons that my DAB is always on Absolute80s [or, admittedly, Jazz fm].
I quite like 70s music too. A lot of my favourite nights out have been to 70s nights - great atmosphere, great music to dance to and a general good time.

Definitely the 80s for me. Some of my favourite bands originated and had their best albums in the 80s.
You had interesting British Indie: The Smiths, The Fall, New Order, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Stone Roses, The Cure, XTC.
You had interesting American Indie Rock: The Pixies, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, Husker Du.
You had interesting Rap: N.W.A., Run-DMC, Beastie Boys.
You had big artists producing some of their best work: Paul Simon, Guns N Roses, Elvis Costello, Michael Jackson, R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen.
Perfect. -
