How do you make money as a student?
Hey guys, I am so close to the end of my overdraft it's unbelievable. Was just seeing if anyone had any interesting and elaborate ways of making money? I'm stumped for ideas. Does anyone have any decent suggestions which aren't on that site? Also, have exhausted the studentbeans site so please don't link me to that!

Re: How do you make money as a student?
Why do people always think there are "easy" ways to make money? Why not just go out and get a job in your spare hours and work bloody hard!
Here's the truth about some money making ventures people try:
- Online get rich quick schemes. All scams. Avoid like the black plague.
- Make a business. All very well and good, but do you have the money to invest in advertising & marketing, an inventory, product development? Do you have the time to do it all if you are a student? Do you have the experience to make it happen? Are you prepared to give loads of your hard-earned money to the taxman? What will you do if it fails? Avoid this until you graduate, you are always better off with a degree to fall back on. Note that some of the ideas people come up with are illegal without a license from the local council (i.e. above mention of giving people lifts). To do this you need a license to operate a taxi, and you probably won't get one. So, again, comes down to do you have the experience?
- Sell your body. Sure you'll make loads of money (even if you're not Pamela Anderson), but will you be able to look yourself in the mirror? Are you willing to put yourself in situations where you are mixing with some very unstable people? Are you prepared to break the law? Are you prepared to expose yourself to the criminal element that usually surrounds such activity? Avoid like the black plague.
- Gamble. Someone mentioned above about betting. Others regularly speak of Poker. Don't be silly... if you're not already very well established and good at these games then you'll have graduated by the time you're making any decent money from them. Don't be lured into this, those who say they make loads of money from them are either lying, or very very good at the games. Almost anyone can make a small amount from online Poker, but it's highly unlikely to ever pay your bills.Last edited by Tycho; 13-07-2012 at 12:35. -

You use the fact that bookies give you a introductory offer when you sign up, there is a limited amount of offers so you can't keep doing it for ever but you can make a few hundred pounds as a one off. -
Re: How do you make money as a student?A few hundred pounds as a one-off isn't going to pay your rent for the duration of your university. This is what I mean about these sorts of things. Earning a living is not as easy as some people make it out to be. If it was then everyone would be doing it.(Original post by mf2004)

Also don't get why the OP has an overdraft? If you need an overdraft to maintain your lifestyle then your lifestyle is too expensive and is destined to fail. An overdraft should only be used to sort a cashflow issue, not live off. -

Hey guys, I am so close to the end of my overdraft it's unbelievable. Was just seeing if anyone had any interesting and elaborate ways of making money? One of the sites I've been on which is pretty good is www.student-money-making.co.uk but other than that, I'm stumped for ideas. Does anyone have any decent suggestions which aren't on that site? Also, have exhausted the studentbeans site so please don't link me to that!
I know it's hard, but keep on trying. -

In addition to the obvious part time job I've found the following decent ways to make a bit of extra cash during uni:
Proof reading/data entry. Ask lecturers if they need either of these for their research projects. The uni will generally pay a pretty decent wage. Particularly I've found lecturers with English as a second language like someone to check for things which sound wrong in English.
Experiments and research. Doing surveys etc or experiments. Search the uni website and watch out on noticeboards.
Working open days. Again pay is pretty good usually for easy, fun work.
