And to be fair, it doesn't say anywhere in the bible that premarital sex is prohibited. It says sexual immorality is, but it doesn't define that, and that's a completely subjective viewpoint.

You're picking and choosing your translations, you didn't even keep it consistent between the two quotes you chose. The King James bible is probably the most widely accepted version and here are those passages:

Hebrews 13:4
King James Version (KJV)
4 Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

(Note it says whoremongers and adulterers, not people who have sex outside marriage/"fornicators")

1 Corinthians 6:9-10
King James Version (KJV)
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.


And okay, I won't argue with this passage, though I haven't much knowledge on the entire context of it. That being said-- drunkards are also included in that passage, and I can't say I know many christians who are also teetotal.

Fornication in that passage is translated from porneia. That word includes implications of a lot of sexual acts but doesn't specify anything. We look at context to see if there is any specific meaning, and sometimes there is, but they are never used to mean sex before marriage. The better translation when context doesn't specify a meaning for porneia is "sexual immorality" and that is clearly up to interpretation from the individual reader.

"Fornication" as a modern word (its meaning changed) has no place in any passages in the Bible - it is a mistranslation and is misleading to so many people.

I didn't quote you. I posted to someone talking about Islamic beliefs on a thread meant to be about Christianity. I've left our futile argument, because when my opponent repeats the same points over and over, it's not worth my time posting the same rebuttals.

love this thread, it does sort of sum up one of the key features as to why religion is silly

just that, if people truthfully believe they would go to hell when they die, then why are they all committing all these so called sin

clearly their conviction is not very strong at all and like the rest of us, they don't really believe in those fairy tale nonsenses

I would go as far as to say they want to believe in the part about heaven, thats about it

Er, we argued about whether sex before marriage in Christianity was wrong.

I pointed out to another poster that this was a thread aimed at Christians, not Muslims.

That is entirely separate from our discussion. Your quoting it was irrelevant. Please don't try and drag up an argument.

There is no conflict between the Old and New testaments for those who understand the way the whole Bible works together and the initial and eternal will of God. The things that God branded as detestable in the Old Testament still are detestable in his sight today as God does not change.(Though there is a difference between regulation & Law in the Old Testament). Christians wish to please God so therefore they refrain from doing what is detestable in God's sight. (This principle stands whether you believe that you have to follow the Old Testament or not).
