Citing websites in text - Harvard referencing
Hello, I'm currently doing a uni assignment and I've paraphrased some sentences that I got from a website, but I'm not sure how to cite in text.

I know I have to include the following:

    The Authors surname and initial
    The year of the publication/report
    The title of the website
A note that it has been accessed online. This is done with [online]
Where you obtained the information (website address)
    Date accessed

So does that mean I have to put this at the end of the paraphrased sentences like this for example:

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
Environment Agency (1999) Nitrate vulnerable zones [online]. Available from: www.environmentagency.gov.uk/modules/MOD43.7.
    html [Accessed 1 September 1999]

Or do I just put that on the reference list/bibliography?
    Thanks for any help.

You will normally find that your University has their own expectations on how referencing should be produced. A quick search on Harvard Referencing brings up half a dozen individual University links On how to approach this. If you just aren't finding anything let us know where you are studying and I'm sure either someone from your Uni can help or we can see which guidelines re out there.

Anyway best of luck and I'm sure it will all go well from here

Generally just surname and year for the in-text citation... As the poster above stated, go with what the uni ask for, The uni may run study skills seminars at the start of year and this is the sort of thing they cover. The uni library may also produce a referencing guide either online or printed and you should take an hour to go through your work with a copy of the guide open checking every comma before hand in or you'll lose marks.

Thank you, it's for the Uni of Bham. I have had a look on the uni website and I used this website to help me:
    http://www.i-cite.bham.ac.uk/index.shtml
I'm just unsure where I've been going wrong as I've followed it through. If it's not too much trouble, would you be able to have a look and point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Page 6 shows what to put in the reference list.

It does not need to go in the actual text.

'Cite Them Right' is a good reference for Harvard style.

Thank you, so I don't need to put anything for it? But I had paraphrased it from a website so doesn't that mean I have to cite it?

you appear to be going wrong by putting the full bibleographic data into the text of your report.
There are two parts of the harvard system, the in-text citing e.g.
"Nitrate vulnerability is bla bla bla (Environment Agency, 1999)" which is what goes in your essay/report
then a separate reference list where the reader can look up the detail of that reference by finding the author, year combination.
You have to do two things. Cite in text (author, year) and produce a correspoding reference list with the full details.
Have a look at some academic papers on google scholar if you want to see examples of harvard in use.

You do but what you listed in your first post is only for the reference list. In the actual text just put author and year like you would reference a book.

Thank you, but if I had paraphrased it, would it be ok if I just put blahblahblah then the author and date after it, rather than before.

Ok then, so if I had paraphrased a whole paragraph, would it be ok to cite it at the end? Also, what if I had a quote, do I cite it in the same way?

    Yes and yes.

Try not to over-paraphrase though, talk about information on the website and cite, or quote it directly and cite, but don't lift off a whole paragraph of information and put it in your own words, even if you cite it it's bad form.

Ok thanks for the advice, what happens if there is more than one author? How would I cite it?

Separate with semicolons (monk_keys, 2012; emotionawreck, 2012). If it's loads of authors just put (monk_keys et al., 2012)

Hello, sorry to bother you again however I am still struggling on my referencing. I've been told that I need to review my bibliography but I am unsure where I have went wrong. This is the format I used:

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
Environment Agency (1999) Nitrate vulnerable zones [online]. Available from: www.environmentagency.gov.uk/modules/MOD43.7.
    html [Accessed 1 September 1999]

    I used page 6 of this: http://www.i-cite.bham.ac.uk/harvardreferencing2010.pdf

It appears I have followed it through. Would it be possible if you could explain where I have went wrong. Thank you.

You don't need to put your quoted or para-phrased text in your reference list, it looks like you've done that?

I accidentally pasted the quoted/paraphrased bit sorry, but I appreciate your effort. You see, I've asked the tutor to explain to me a few times on where I've went wrong but he seems reluctant to help as he just repeatedly tells me to refer to this source to help and won't actually tell me where I've went wrong.

    But anyway thank you

Do you know it's a problem with that source? They could be encouraging you to double check you've got all your full-stops, commas, colons etc in the right place.
