things to do in Durham?
Welcome to the University of Durham forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from the differences between colleges to the nightlife, an abundance of Rahs to the Stockton campus.

things to do in Durham?
obviously not directly to do with the university, but i'd still appreciate any advice or suggestions.
my friend and i are taking a day trip (ha) to Durham on Monday on the train...weather is meant to be mostly dry, and was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of things that we could get up to/places we could go/places to eat during the day in the centre of Durham?
we're both students, so free things = good.
also as we're both at Oxford, we're not too fussed about going round colleges and things
THANKS

Re: things to do in Durham?
You could:
Visit the cathedral and climb the 325 (ish) stairs to the top.
Visit Crook Hall [5 minutes walk from the city centre], which is a period property with some lovely gardens.
Go on a river cruise [Prince Bishop] or hire a rowing boat to go along the river.
Visit the Oriential Museum, Durham Heritage Centre or one of the other museum/heritage sites on the Bailey.

Re: things to do in Durham? To add to Infinity's comments, if you're there in the evening, I recommend La Spagettata (or 'Spags'(Original post by flywithemma)

) on North Bailey if you like Italian, which is an awesome restaurant. Or if you're just there during the day, there's one further south down the road which has ridiculously cheap lunchtime deals (San Marco). You may guess I eat a lot of pasta...
Go on a walk around the river paths!
