Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?
I didn't really care for an en-suite because I only had to share a bathroom with one other person. It was always clean thanks to the cleaners and I never had to wait to use it. Perhaps if I had to share it with say 6 or 7 people I might have been concerned, but honestly I thought I got a better deal than those with en-suites - much cheaper rent, a bigger room and a perfectly good bathroom I didn't have to clean or buy loo paper for

This is exactly why!(Original post by Carrby)
Because people don't trust the stereotypical chunder dragons to keep it clean? That's why I want an en-suite. And because then I can shower whenever I like rather than sorting out a schedule with a bunch of people I don't know and might not even like.
PLUS I don't wanna catch any STI/D's from anyone else using the same toilet! (You never know...)

Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?
The main reason I've chosen en-suite is because I fully expect there to be a fairly large proportion of 18 year old students that don't keep basic hygiene standards who, more than likely, got most of their stuff done by their parents before they started.
Not saying that all would be like this, but I've lived in my own place before, with house mates, and I know stuff doesn't get done. I wouldn't want to be the grumpy old bastard complaining about the ginger wheelspins left in the toilet with piss coloured walls around the porcelain God to match.Last edited by Pitt1988; 07-07-2012 at 13:33. -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?Pretty much this. Although I was lucky and never really had a choice between en-suite or not.(Original post by madders94)
I have IBS, I can't risk having to wait for the toilet and it's not fair on the people I'd be sharing a bathroom with, and due to the nature of IBS I'll be a lot more comfortable with an en-suite. -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?
I wasn't too bothered about sharing really - as long as I wasn't sharing with many people. My friend shares a bathroom with one other person, which is great because she knows if its messy, its the other girl. What I was worried about was the inevitable arguments about 'its your mess, clean it up' 'no its not, it must have been x' 'noo y was the last to use it, must have been them' I think we'll get enough of that in the kitchen :P
Besides, apparently most of the rooms at my uni are en suite, so tbh I was just following the crowd. And I keep a horrendous amount of toiletries in the bathroom, don't fancy carrying it to and from the bathroom each time I need a shower. And leaving it there would just annoy my housemates. And it wasn't too much more expensive than a non ensuite room. -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?
In Manchester it is pay ~£90 a week and share a pooper, or pay in excess of £130. That's daylight robbery. For that amount you can get a VERY nice flat just outside the centre.
Unfortunately, some of us don't get very nice student loans and can't afford such places with your own throne. My girlfriend gets £900 (yes, £900!!!) from SAAS as her loan.
In my humble opinion, go cheap and use the extra money in your pocket to have a better time. I may be saying this because the means-testing system really hasn't worked in my favour and is complete rubbish - but I do think I genuinely would go cheap if I got a full loan and grant etc.
Never once have I had to wait to take a dump or clean my balls. It's really no issue sharing to me personally.
I just want to know how paying £40 to £50 quid extra PER WEEK(!) is in any way reasonable. It's student accommodation for crying out loud. -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?That's complete bull. People who pay for/can afford en-suites are just as messy. Purely depends on the people you're living with! Just because I can't afford good accommodation doesn't mean I'm messy!!!(Original post by Alexander94)
I have medical reasons for needing a bathroom near to my bed, and I also have a theory that people who are willing to pay for en-suite are likely to care about cleanliness, and thus keep the kitchen clean... maybe... please! -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?
When I was a first year all the stupid mugs who had paid extra for en suite were incredibly jealous of us with our huge and pristine communal bathrooms that were cleaned every day by professional cleaners, and the useful sinks in our room. Whereas by comparison they had tiny rooms with these tiny ensuite pods that a grown man could barely fit in that stank.
Why would anyone pay MORE money for the privilege of cleaning their own bathroom? -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?
Because when you've had to put up with constant clogging of the plug hole with girls hair, a tampon appearing in the corner of the bathroom, $hit on the door and side of the bath and general other disgusting crap such as sick everywhere, an en-suite is highly preferable.

Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?
I had ensuite in my first year, and as I was friends with a load of people in the shared bathroom halls I got to see why my choice was so great.
Some people are disgusting. The shared people were seperated boys and girls on seperate floors, but the boys would still go up and ruin the girls' bathrooms when they'd dirtied theirs too much to use. People was poo EVERYWHERE to the point that you couldn't enter the room, they would wash their football boots in the bath and leave them (along with a mountain of watery mud) all in the bath, so you can't use it. They would play practical jokes where they put cling film on toilets, unlocked doors and stole people's towels, went to the windows and threw tea bags into baths while people were in them.
I could go on forever. All of this, plus the fact that there were 6 of them sharing (which apparently is a low number compared to some unis) which made timing in the mornings very difficult showed me that I made the right decision.
I shared a kitchen with 3 other people, but we each had our own very small bathroom (toilet, basin, shower), and it worked out great. I didn't have to put up with any of the crap that some of my friends did.
As it happens, I did save money too. The shared halls were also "catered" (where I was self-catered), and so they actually cost more overall than my halls did. -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?Sorry to disappoint but it's not just clean people who ask for ensuite but also lazy people who want to be able to leave dirty clothes on the bathroom floor without getting moaned at by flatmates, leave their shower stuff out without it getting taken/used by other people, lay in bed that little bit longer without worrying about not being able to shower before uni because the bathroom is occupied and who just generally cba with walking further to the bathroom.(Original post by Alexander94)

I've also seen a kitchen shared by 5 people with ensuites and there was a pan with dried on chilli which was apparently from over a week ago, along with several dirty pans/plates/cups/cutlery/baking trays etc all over the sides. However all the people in the flat seemed ok with it so it might not be so bad if some people aren't.
I've got an ensuite and whilst I certainly wouldn't describe myself as a clean freak I will at least stack my dirty plates etc neatly next to the sink until there are enough there to justify running a sink of water to wash them up. -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?That's what these things called "cleaners" are paid to sort out for you on a daily basis.(Original post by EonBlueApocalypse)

Besides, what kind of animals did you live with? -
Re: Why Do People Care About En-Suites?Not every uni has daily cleaners and even then people can still come in and mess it up after the cleaners have been but before you go in.(Original post by py0alb)
