Need ideas for a gift for a 18 year old Mummy!
    Sarcastic/unfunny/rude/unhelpful suggestions will be ignored.

So my friend is due to give birth at the end of August, and she's having a baby shower soon. I'm totally stuck for what to get her as a present!

We have a kind of strange friendship in that we used to be incredibly close, then drifted apart through school, but are now quite close again. She's had a real rough time of it recently, and I want to get her something for herself, as well as something for baby. Budget isn't really a big issue if the present is worth it, but within reasonable limits obviously :P

Any suggestions would be great! Here's a few other things that might be relevant:

    • She's having a boy
    • She's hoping to move in to her own place with baby not long after the birth
    • She says she's already got all of the stuff she needs for the baby (which doesn't really help!)

    Thanks!

You could still buy the baby something like clothes/teddy ect for the baby, your friend will never have enough and how could you not resist if you see a cute little outfit.
For your friend maybe something she could put in her new place, something to go on the wall or something decorative. Or you could get her something her treat herself with, like creams or bath stuff.

When my 17 year old friend was pregnant, I got her some spa bath stuff and she said it was nice to relax when her baby was asleep.

Maybe some other people can up with some other suggestions

Clothes, beauty stuff, take her out for the day somewhere worthwhile, maybe a voucher for dinner?

Yeah that's a good idea - I was thinking maybe I could get some slightly bigger clothes for when the baby is a bit older, to save her having to buy a whole new load in a few months time?!

Thanks for the tips Something for the new place would be good too!

I know I'll get negged for saying protection, so I won't bother.

Vouchers would be good - I know they sort of lack the personal touch but they are so useful! Doing them for dinner will make sure she uses it for herself at least!

Haha that actually looks amazing! I really want to make that - it looks pretty easy.

Yep definitely because they grow out of clothes so quickly, maybe 3-6 or 6-9 months.
I like some of the other ideas too and I agree that cake is clever
    Good luck with it

you should of documented her pregnancy and made a flip book of her getting bigger haha.

if she says she has everything she needs for the baby but is moving into a new home get her something for the home since she probably doesn't have all that stuff.

Awh thats actually such a cute idea hahah. I'll be doing that if I ever have a baby!

I think that's probably the best best - there'll be a million things she'll need for the place! Thanks

+1 for both the relaxing gift for mum and looking at the 6-9 month range of clothing although it may be worth checking out how much storage space she has before buying anything big!

When we were expecting our first, my work colleagues clubbed together to buy us some bonds - it was packaged with a few baby books and university guides so as to be an investment in the child's future which we thought was a fantastic idea - more info can be found here:

    Both great ideas, thanks!

Bonds seems like something really worthwhile; it may be a bit out of my budget but I'll definitely have a look at the link. There may be someone I can club together with for her.

Babygros are probably going to be a good bet - I might get some multipack ones for various ages, something she can store fairly easily!

A few other websites for gift ideas include kiddiecare and bounty (sorry I don't have the URLs to hand. The bounty one is particularly good as they have a newsletter which often links to flash sales where you can save £££s off the RRP. If your friend isn't aware of Bounty (she should get a pack from them at some stage with vouchers and freebies) I can recommend she visits them and registers to the newsletter.

    Just a couple of ideas!

    - Go on money saving expert , they always have great ideas.
    - Anytime you see offers on nappies or coupons, print or cut them out and save them, it will be a big help
    - Put together a hamper yourself, buy a wicker basket (cheap from Wilkos, and will also be handy for storage for her) and you can fill it with a section for luxuries for her, i.e chocolate, years subscription for a magazine, basic make up like mascara and eyeliner that you always run out of so she won't and then luxuries for the baby, like talcum powder, baby oil etc, so like a his and hers
    - Make a good quality notebook for her, so she can document the babies early life, first crawl, first smile, age it got to 30lbs etc.
    - Get several jars, and fill them with dry ingredients for a recipe. Idea here: http://www.food.com/recipe/white-cho...wnie-mix-97997 , http://www.mixesinajar.com/ but you could do it for dry ingredients for soups and stuff so she can move in and she's got ready made stuff to make things.
    - Buy a blender, and stuff it full of fruit like grapes and blueberries and orange segments and strawberries so she can make a healthy drink for whilst she's pregnant and the blender will come into use for when she's in her new home

    Just a few ideas

Do you know if she's been avoiding any food because of her pregnancy? Caffeine/chocolate/peanut butter/soft cheese? If so, that's a possibility - maybe you could put it in a hamper with some bath stuff, a stuffed toy for the baby and some functional things like wipes, nappies, etc.

When I was pregnant, a friend gave me a fluffy blanket to put in my son's Moses basket... he's almost two now, and it's now his comfort blanket and he takes it everywhere

Lol you're welcome - when the boss gets back from her (now rare) girly night out and is feeling well enough I'll ask her for any other tips/sites worth checking out. Oh and mothercare are VERY expensive for what you actually get but do have good sales - and excellent facilities if she decides to go down the breast feeding route 😃
