told to wear more make up?
Basically I dropped off several cvs in various restaurants. From one of the restaurants I was called back within 10mins. They were very keen to have me said I had the job just needed to go for a trial the following day. I turned up had the trial then never heard from them. I called a week later asking how it had gone and was told I had the job as long as I wore more make up. Apparently when I dropped my cv off I looked very pretty (I was wearing a lot of make up) I'm debating accepting the job now as although I really need the money I feel as if the rest of the employees at the restaurant will know the situation which makes me feel slightly awkward. Any suggestions?

Re: told to wear more make up?
it depends how badly you want the job. you could:
accept it, since you need the money a little more make up wouldn't do any harm. and the fact that they said you looked very pretty with make up on is encouraging. i doubt other employees would care tbh, and you shouldn't either.
OR
fight the power and tell them to p*** off because you can do better.

Re: told to wear more make up?
I guess it's fair enough if they don't want their staff having the zombified washed out appearance that I have if I'm not wearing make-up (or enough make-up).
I think it's kinda bad though that they're basically saying they only want you working there if you're looking pretty. We all have our days where we look like crap and our hair won't go right etc. and to be honest on those days the last thing I'd want is my boss telling me I look like crap and need to make more of an effort. After all, it's not a modelling job.
It's up to you I guess though, do you have another job or at least an interview available? If you don't and you really need a job then I don't think this is a reason to turn it down. If you don't like it there then it could just be temporary until you find something you'd prefer. -

it isnt your fault you were born ugly -
Re: told to wear more make up?
Aw this is awful, it sounds as if they have knocked your confidence. They shouldn't have said that in that way - its not like you are working at a make up counter.
I think it depends how much you enjoyed the trial, I turned down a job because the interviewer quizzed by political preference and was so arrogant - and I am so glad I did as I ended up getting a job in a store a few shops down from this guy and everyone in his store looked miserable. -

Do you mind wearing more make up?
No - then don't accept the job.
Yes - then accept the job.

Re: told to wear more make up?
In waitressing managers are keen to have their staff looking visibly pretty ie. make-up as there apparently is some psychological effect (something a previous employer told me) that people will be keen to buy more if there person serving it looks good and will not be put off their food! Ridiculous I know, but it does make sense...

Fairly certain as I've never heard of restaurant modelling lol -

Re: told to wear more make up?
I can see why this would bother you. It would probably bother me. I'm not a huge fan of my appearance without make-up, I've got lots of spots (pretty sure it's actually mild acne now, I hate it) so I'm a tad self-conscious about it. I suppose you have to try and not see it as a reflection on your looks as such, more as a case of looking presentable and like you've made an effort, like wearing smart clothes or making sure your hair is brushed and things.
But if you're honestly offended by them saying that, then don't take the job unless you really need the money.
