Re: Lack of mature anime these days?
I don't know if this is what you are looking for but it is pretty good and requires a lot of thinking;
1. Monster
2. Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Not really based around reality but is based around a person who has to prove that the actions caused by a "witch" weren't supernatural at all but one of human origin) -
Re: Lack of mature anime these days?I'm trying to think of anime that aired relatively recently and matches your description. Jormungand, Rainbow, Senkou no Night Raid and at a push Durarara!! (which is definitely worth watching, anyway) come to mind.(Original post by eterna)
What's with the abundance of slice of life/romance/silly animal shows and all the high school girls?
Will we ever again get some action-ish, seinen anime that actually have roots to reality like Darker than Black and Baccano?
Unfortunately, as anime primarily targets the shounen demographic due to generally higher television ratings and revenue, you'll always find similarity of approach and style.Last edited by Aiko; 07-07-2012 at 10:39. -
Re: Lack of mature anime these days? Its because the fans of this sort of thing spend more money.(Original post by eterna)

But there are still recent more serious darker series such as the ones Aiko has listed.

Re: Lack of mature anime these days? There are a couple of mangas that might fit your description like 7SEEDS in terms of complex well developed characters and good plot and 17SAI in terms of horrific and traumatic event that actually happened in real life with the viewpoint of both the tormentors and the victims. Delivery is also a good manga. Did you watch INTERLUDE? It consists of 3 episodes and it's really good if you stick to it.(Original post by eterna)

Re: Lack of mature anime these days?
I suppose another example of a "mature" anime is Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle.
Kinda slow I will admit but is pretty decent.
Plot:
An archeologist who is approximately 14 years old has fallen in love with the princess and she in turn has returned his feelings. Towards the end of the first episode, the princess does something and this causes her to lose all her memories (by her memories appearing as wings and when she is pulled out, her memories are spread across dimensions in the form of feathers). As a result, they go to the dimensional witch (who you may or may not know from another anime series). However, the price of being able to transend dimensions is a great one and Syaoron (the 14 year old boy) must pay a great price for such a privilege.
I will say no more other than that, yes there is humour in it but doesn't contain the whole highschool girl panties/t*ts sort of thing.
Trailer (Engllish dubbed):

Re: Lack of mature anime these days?
There's plenty, if you keep an eye out for it, though the general trend of most shows nowadays is towards slice of life. I'd care more, but I stopped the whole "mature anime only" thing after I watched Aria back in 05; people like me, are pretty much the target demographic for all the SoL shows nowadays.
If you want something a bit more mature, I'd suggest you read more manga or visual novels. You could also look into doujinshi work, which can cover a whole range of things: from taboo subjects like stories based on real life murders, something completely original, characters from a light-hearted series placed in a darker setting or vice versa. Basically whatever any random author can think of. -

In the meantime, there's tonnes of stuff to watch. Check out this guy's list.
Anything rated 7 and above ( and dosen't include the comedy genre) is what you're looking for.
