Southampton Vs. Cranfield - Space Engineering MSc
    Hey guys,

I’m holding offers from Southampton Uni and Cranfield Uni for similar MSc courses (Space Systems Engineering at Soton and Astronautics and Space Engineering at Cranfield). My views of both unis are fairly balanced – they both have good standards of teaching, their courses are very similar and they are both reputable unis. I’m not too bothered about the city itself.

I was hoping for any previous/current postgrad students at either of these unis to share your personal experience and opinion regarding the engineering department, their facilities, and your overall postgrad experience in general. Even if you know others who went/go to either of these unis, any info would be great.

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I recently completed a BEng in Aerospace Engineering. My views of both universities are still quite balanced, but I think I will be heading to Cranfield University due to their reputation within the industry.

I have been told by other students/academics, that if you're thinking of going into academics (research, etc.) in the future then Southampton is probably the better option, whereas if you would like to work in industry then Cranfield should be your choice. But all in all, both universities have great standards of teaching and good facilities, so you can't go wrong with either in my opinion. Cranfield is a much quieter place though, so if you're looking for a more vibrant area then you won't find much luck at Cranfield (although it is nearby to London).

Are you applying for the 2012/13 intake or are you just looking for some insight for future consideration?

Both universities have very experienced lecturers. I've also spoken to a few HR people, and they say the modules taught at both universities are taught to a high standard.

Yes, with good cover and reference letters you would get into either uni.
