A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.
Hi,
So i've decieded that i want to either be a Lawyer and do law at uni or do History at uni then go somewhere with that?
So are my Alevel options are:
History
Business Studies
I.T
Sociolgy
The only reason why I'm choosing not to do Alevel law is because i was told uni's don't really like it?
Are my Alevel options okay for wanting to do law at uni?
And lastly whats best College or Sixth form?
Thank you

Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.3 of your 4 A Levels would be classed as relatively soft [History being the exception].(Original post by Vinster)

Swapping out one of those for a stronger subject like English Lit would be better for you. I would recommend ditching IT/Business Studies. -
Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.
Not meaning to be an echo of the other posters before me but History is the only reputable subject in the mix. The others are considered 'soft' subjects by Uni's such as oxbridge, for example.
Perhaps History, English, Economics Would be a wiser choice. With Maths or a Science as a fourth option if you were compelled to take one
As for 6th Form/College. There is no real answer.
They both have their perks, 6th form tends to be more structured and like school with uniform dress codes ect. whilst college seems to endorse more independence and self-reliance to do your work. I suppose you are treated more like an adult, usually calling Tutors by their first name ect.Last edited by Occams Chainsaw; 07-07-2012 at 15:59. -
Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.
I am starting sixth form this september and then I want to do law at oxford.
i am taking:
history
english literature
philosophy
chemistry
apparently hard subjects like history and english show off your academic ability.
choosing a science also shows a range of ability and that your mind is capable of more than just research and essays, but also the analytical and mathamatical stuff that science requires. to forfil that criteria you could choose to do any of the sciences, maths, economics or indeed ICT as computer sciences are still sciences and require a lot of numbers, functional skills and that sort of thinking. If you can get an A in it then i dont see any problem with you taking ICT, dont listen to the others, it is a valid A-level option.
i have been told that doing philosophy is good for me as I can get a good grade in it and even do an EPQ for it. i think that for law you need a good understanding of people and morality, so actually sociology will be just as good an option to forfill that criteria. it shows you know how society works and can be a good talking point for you university interview.
finally, buisness studies, i dont think it is particularly well respected by universities but depending on what you want to do after university it could practically be helpful to have that sort of knowledge, especially if you are thinking of either starting your own buisness or going into corporate law.
not to mention you have to drop one of these when you get to A2, and the university doesnt really care about the AS option you take, they may use it as a deciding factor between you and a similar candidate but it wont be the first thing they look at. so maybe drop buisness studies when you get to A2? but it is your choice, obviously dont if you think it is the only A-level that you are going to get an A* in
hope this helps, good luck -
Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.
Hi everyone!
Thank you for all posts, the only problem I have is With English Lit as for the coursework i got an A, but in my unit 1 exam i recieved a B, and i was awful at poetry so I'm probably only going to get an B overall in Englist lit. So is it worth taking at Alevel and only getting somthing like a B?
In history,Business,and I.T im predicted A's.
Im not even that good at maths either..
So how do these Alevels sound:
History
Economics ( However does this subject include a lot of maths?)
Socialogy
Business Studies
Thanks

For what it's worth, A Level Law is certainly fine as a fourth, and as a third (as long as it's accompanied by traditional subjects).(Original post by viksta1000)
I'd say for Law, you should stick with conventional subjects like English, Maths and Sciences...I would probably swap IT for English, and Law for a science or Economics
Although your grades are more important, so be sure to aim for AAA and above
See the resources from my other post here. -
Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.Swap Business Studies for Economics, IT for Computing if you want to do something like IT and sociology for government and politics because Unis like more traditional and conventional subjects(Original post by Vinster)

Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.Don't do A level law, its a massive WOT, and universities don't like it. I'd say the best subjects for Law are as follows, in no particular order.(Original post by Vinster)

Philosophy
History
Classics
Latin
Economics
English
A modern language such as French or German for example
Government and Politics
Perhaps a science such as Chemistry or Biology, but I'd stick with the arts. It wouldn't be your primary subject. -
Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer. Not true in either respect. A Level Law is certainly fine as a fourth, and as a third (as long as it's accompanied by traditional subjects), and I found it very useful - see the resources from my other post here.(Original post by Trailblazer)

Re: A level options for wanting to be a lawyer.I would say swap the latter as you said but for a different reason - not because a university might like it better (which they will, you're right), but because it's far, far more interesting.(Original post by hajinator)
Swap Business Studies for Economics, IT for Computing if you want to do something like IT and sociology for government and politics because Unis like more traditional and conventional subjects
I took sociology A level 15 years ago and it was appalling. Classics might be better (i.e. more enjoyable and informative) still than government and politics.
I'd also say swap computing for maths...
