Re: Curves
the "real woman brigade" (read "real" as FAT) annoy me so much... saying someone isn't "real" just because they don't way 500 pounds is really offensive... i think the daily mail commenters are the biggest perpetrators of this... just to make themselves feel better about being obese when really they should be plucking up the courage to go to the gym OR accept that there are women smaller than them and move on! they obviously aren't happy with themselves so instead of abusing others they should do something about it. these "curvy" woman are usually obese... it doesn't even mean big boobs/hips etc. anymore like kate upton(
)/kelly brook
you are a real woman WHATEVER shape you are! fat, thin or average! the most important thing is whether you are damaging yourself by being obese or dangerously underweight.
though also think the way which you described having "extra fat" was quite negative and offensive... you can't have it both ways. -
Re: Curves
I'm not a small girl, but even I disagree with what people define 'curvy' as nowadays. And the term 'real woman' is absolutely ridiculous. I think it's because of the stereotype that all fat people are funny, and all thin people are sluts. It's just not true in the slightest and it's really no wonder so many people have a problem with their bodies.

Re: Curves
It's a really missed opportunity - there was a chance, in the fightback against idealised female figures in mainstream media, for there to be a growing acceptance of female bodies of different shapes and a celebration of what is healthy. But what actually happened is that women who had these 'ideal' figures were vilified even if that's just the way they happen to look, and it was turned into some sort of weird war between the women considered attractive in the mainstream media and 'real women' who defined themselves negatively, by being 'not what the others are' rather the positively, by being what was natural and healthy for them.
Now we're in a situation where unhealthy body types can't be subjected to appropriate criticism because this concept of being 'real' and 'curvy' has caught on, and women who identify with these words fail to understand that the ideal should be to accept natural variance in female body types whilst promoting health, rather than to claim a territory of a particular body type and promote it no matter what. These women are falling into exactly the same trap as those who bought into the idea that extremely skinny models are the only type of attractive women, but this time it's harder to shift this idea because they're doing it to themselves. And all the time, whilst leaping to the defence of women who are unhealthily large, they will casually throw negative language at smaller women.
And furthermore, on top of this pretty solid and well thought argument, I'm really, really not attracted to fat chicks. -
Re: Curves
Agree with you word for word! A "real woman" has XX chromosomes, not a certain body shape, large amount of fat or massive chest.
I do find it hilarious when obese people use it as an excuse though. Like "oh, it's OK that I weigh 50 stone and am on the verge of a heart attack, I'm proud to be a real woman!". Surely they know no-one is convinced..Last edited by Marsha2112; 08-07-2012 at 23:48. -

Re: CurvesI read a few articles that said curvy meaning large breasts small waist large bum within reason and proportion size indicates fertility and able to feed your babies. Don't know why, it's like when researchers say big eyes is a sign of youth and clear skin is a sign of good health. Which isn't always the case.(Original post by Bluer.)
I hate this when it is used as a euphemism for what is frankly obesity - obviously someone can be attractive at any size, but when it comes to actual body fat % (especially around your middle, I believe) at a certain level it is very risky health-wise.
I understand it used for very hourglassy bodies, but there is no reason at all that is the most desireable body shape. Surely body type descriptions such as 'slim', 'athletic', 'pear-shaped' etc do not at all denote them as less or more attractive than 'curvy'
I take any type of research with a grain of salt like when someone researched that if your waist is bigger than 31.5 inches (80cm) we are not healthy when it depends on BMI and ethnic body type. -
Re: Curves
Sorry to dig this thread back out but I just read an article on Daily Mail about bloody kelly brook that really annoyed me. In this interview she says (and I quote):
"'I’d rather eat and have boobs, a bum and a bit of overhang than be really skinny and have sad, saggy boobs and a flat bum. You have to make a choice and then love yourself."
Basically insinuating that anyone who is 'skinny' or bascially not a 'real woman' has a 'sad' 'flat' figure.
What was most infuriating were the comments, which tbh I take with a pinch of salt because it's DM, but here are a few:
"glorious. now thats a REAL woman." (the highest rated comment)
"That's what a real woman should look like with plenty of voluptuous curves!"
"That, boys & Girls, is a WOMAN."
I can't understand why people are still fixated on this real woman thing. It's very irritating. (especially considering on most articles about Kelly Brook people just comment about how she's put on weight! it's so hypocritical!) -
Re: Curves
All words to do with women's size and shape are inherently ****ing retarded. Everyone should just grow up, accept that people are different shapes and sizes, and use ACTUAL ****ING MEASUREMENTS. **** all these magic ratios. If someone looks good they look good. If someone looks fat, then they look ****ing fat.

Re: CurvesCan you please just post on the next one 'Love, you're fat not curvy, shut up and get in a gym'?(Original post by ildaf123)
I have one of them girls on fb who is constantly posting about how she is curvy, and posting them photo's with the quotes on them, the latest status was her complaining about how nice clothes are not made for "real curvy women". And I remember one saying that since she is a real woman that she needs a handsome, big, strong and successful man and not a boy and then said something like leave the boys to the little girls, that status ended in some people getting a bit wound up, but she isn't even curvy, she is overweight, she isnt massive she is probably a size 16 but she has no waist, hip and chest definition at all she is an obvious brick shape, its so fustrating to watch someone be so deluded. -
Re: CurvesYup!(Original post by funsongfactory)
People should just be happy in their bodies and try and be healthy and not worry about others opinions I think

Re:CurvesI think you're reading a bit too much into the Kelly brook quote! It looks to me like she is discussing what would happen to her body if she were skinny, especially considering her natural body type is quite voluptuous.(Original post by LavenderBlueSky88)

Re: Curves(Original post by LavenderBlueSky88)
Does anyone else despise this word?
It seems anyone with a big rack is described as being 'curvy' or a 'real woman' these days. Gosh I didn't know that having extra fat on my chest was the deciding factor of whether or not i'm 'real'.
Curvy has been taken over by people who use it to make themselves feel better about being overweight. They also seem to use it as a weapon against slim girls 'oh she's got no CURVES'.
I thought that to have 'curves' meant that you go in and out and the waist - it has nothing to do with size or fat percentage!
Rant over!

Re: Curves(Original post by Stryder402)
just the same way many many women classify a ''real man'' as someone who is 6ft and ripped,
(no not hating, im 6ft but not ripped)
I highly respect you for that

back to the textbook then
