Any Advice For My First Custom Build
I have been saving up for ages to build my first custom computer. I have done a lot of repairs on desktops and laptops and have learnt all I know from the internet because I enjoy. So I want to go the whole way and build my own beast.
Money: 500-600 pounds is my budget. Possibly slightly more.
Uses: Video editing, loads of downloading, loads of watching movies. Lots of multitasking of greedy software
Case: I really dont know but from my research so far I quite like the Coolermaster Storm Enforcer Mid Tower OR Cm Storm Mid Tower. I like their designs but any suggestions welcome.
PSU: Not sure at all- any advice on what I need?
RAM: Probably 8gb Corsair ram?
Motherboard: Not sure at all- any advice on what I need?
CPU Cooler: Not sure at all- any advice on what I need?
CPU: Preferably i7, maybe i5. I DO NOT overclock or do much gaming.
HDD: I am not sure because I dont really think I need a SSD and they are more expensive. In total I want at least 1TB or more space but not sure if I should just get a hard drive/s or a SSD as well.
SDD: See above
GFX Card: I dont do much gaming but do use a lot of video software etc but no where as near as much as some people do.
FAN: Most people place a lot of emphasis on fans/ coolers but for my above reasons I dont think I need to worry to much and 1 should be enough. What do you reccomend?
I know there is a lot of blanks but any help would be useful. I know you guys are super clever but I love computers and want to build a powerful, fast, and reliable computer to last. Please help. -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildMy issue is that if your gonna be doing serious amounts of video editing than the latest i7 would pretty much take up 1/3 of your budget :/(Original post by momanium)

If your serious about it, an i7 along with ram and case, decent motherboard, psu and hdd sets you back about £560, you won't need an aftermarket cooler unless ur gonna overclocker, though it'll good for low temps in high load. Then about £40 for a optical drive and graphics :/.............if you went for an i5 you would have over £100, graphics can help in editing. -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom Build
If you want a decent rig with an i7 then £600 isn't enough, you would be spending nearly half your budget on the processor, if you slack off on other parts then you will nullify the benefits! I'd say you need to be able to stretch the budget to maybe £800, would that be possible?

Re: Any Advice For My First Custom Build
I dont do LOADS of video editing so I can understand the suggestions to lower to an i5. I understand that ebuyer is the best for components(?) but the cheapest i7 I can find is:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Sandyb...1698633&sr=8-1
which is £220 in comparison to:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Sandyb...1698570&sr=8-1
So a £60 difference. Is this right or am I looking wrong. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. Realistically £600 is my highest amount.Last edited by momanium; 07-07-2012 at 23:26. -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildIt's the same link and also they are the 2nd gen processors, i7's are already out..................if your really on a budget than AMD is ok........i got a fx-8120 running with a Asus sabretooth motherboard with a 6870..........(Original post by momanium)

Re: Any Advice For My First Custom Build
Oh right, are the sandybridges the second gen. In which case, these are the new links:

Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildSorry, could you expand?(Original post by Daniel_R)
Why not use a core I5. -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildWell the performance difference is minimal. You'd be better off spending the cash on other parts.(Original post by momanium)
Sorry, could you expand? -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildThis might sound a bit silly, but do you have a link. I dont understand what the difference is. These are quad cores, arent they?(Original post by Daniel_R)

Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildThe difference between a core I5 and I7 is hyper-threading.(Original post by momanium)
This might sound a bit silly, but do you have a link. I dont understand what the difference is. These are quad cores, arent they?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading
Basically a core I7 splits each core into 2 virtual cores effectively turning a quad core into a 8 core CPU but the frequency remains the same and not many programs make use of it nor do i know any programs that can make use of 8 cores. -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildYeah the ones you previously linked were sandy bridge, but you linked the new ones so its ok(Original post by momanium)
This might sound a bit silly, but do you have a link. I dont understand what the difference is. These are quad cores, arent they?
i5's are quad core with 4 threads.........of which the k version is the unlocked version so you can overclock it.
i7's range from quad core with 8 threads to 6 cores and 12 threads.....same with the k version
The difference between the 2 is hyperthreading mainly, so it's beneficial for those who do a lot of video editing and high end program usage..........in terms of gaming they quite similar, i7 sometimes worse.
But you'll also need a decent graphics card when your rendering and so on. -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildMain difference is although they both have 4 physical cores, the i7 has hyperthreading enabled, so has 4 cores/8 threads while the i5 has 4 cores/4 threads...(Original post by momanium)
This might sound a bit silly, but do you have a link. I dont understand what the difference is. These are quad cores, arent they?
There will only be a performance difference in programs that are written to make use of all 8 threads so mainly video editing etc, but even for tasks such as these the i5 is still very powerful and capable, so if you're aiming for £600 the i5 is probably the better choice. -
Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildYeah it should be enough as you'll be doing casual video editing......quad cores more than enough........trust me my 8 core barely pushes on anything, most i've ever got was 100% on 1 core, the rest doesn't do anything.(Original post by momanium)
Oh right, yep. The i5 I posted a link to (3rd gen) cannot hyperthread and only uses the 4 cores and it seems with my budget I will be getting an i5. Is that ok?

Re: Any Advice For My First Custom BuildZ77 chipset assuming you go with either one of the ivybridge i5 or i7s. I like Asus, lots of people seem to like Gigabyte. Most are pretty similar really these days...(Original post by momanium)
Any other suggestions, for example the motherboard.
