What is the difference, if any, between downloading via a torrent or using a YouTube converter website?
    YouTube is paid for

    It's theft:
Dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another with the intention to permanently deprive- s.1 Theft Act 1968.
Up to 7 years in prison s.7 Theft Act 1968
Noob question: how do you define 'permanently deprive'? I ask because those industries wouldn't be 'deprive' really.

Bullsh*t. I have the right to share any of my belongings with anyone. The corporations don't have intellectual property over my belongings once they are mine.
Yes they do. The law says they do. You can't just invent your own rights that the law doesn't recognise.

£1 per song is a bit overpriced though.

It's not theft, it's breach of copyright punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment - s107 of the Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988
    This.

It's very clear that the theft act does not apply to intellectual rights (Oxford vs Moss).

I was just about to download will.i.am's new single, This Is Love, on torrent, but then thought better of it and will do so via iTunes instead.

But it got me thinking, if I download 1 song, worth 99p, if I got caught by the record company, then they should sue me for 99p, yeah? Where do the record companies get their financial penalty figures of $332,987,701 just for a poor guy who downloaded one song?

How can they justify that without being laughed outta court?
it will be on youtube. just go there and download it, there are any number of websites and applications that allow you to rip the audio from music videos and save it to your computer.

I remember in my Media Studies A-level class, we were studying music an the teacher admitted getting music free off the internet an asked who else in the class did this, 75% of the class raised their hands. I'm not justifying it, just pointing out how mainstream music theft is. Stealing is the norm.

Well you dont just buy one song, and listen to that song only. If i want an album worth of songs from different 'artists' itll cost me around £15. Also itunes is known for ****ing up. I've lost playlists of music before, and theres no way ill re-buy them all again.

As said by someone whose name I forgot, if an artist's music is being downloaded illegally, it means that it isn't good enough.

Still no excuse to break the law, I'm sure if you got a huge fine for downloading music illegally
It would be a bigger deal than not spending a mere £15

It's not legally your belonging, you have purchased a licence to some intellectual property and part of the contract is that only one person is allowed to use it. If you wish to buy the licence to share it will cost you just a few million pounds extra .

Whatever it technically is under the eyes of the law, it's illegal, and rightly so. It's part of the destruction of an industry that gives so many people jobs.

I know there are limitations on this (5 times I believe?) but you can just re-download already purchased music onto the same computer. Have you really lost your music that many times before? Bad luck, if so.

What destruction? The music industry in many areas has grown greatly over the last decade.
