I would highly recommend a macbook air if you want something portable. Obviously it is quite expensive and you could get a netbook for a fraction of the price. However, please don't as they will give you hell even through word processing, haha. If you want something cheaper than the macbook but better than a netbook get a low end ultra book - There are some good ultra books out there for a decent price.

I cannot necessarily recommend anything for bulkier laptops but you do not necessarily need to dish out for a macbook if the laptop will not be used for anything too heavy duty.

    I hear Samsung are good.

Yeah you're certainly right on the netbook, I have one and it's basically impossible to use.

here's a link to the HP student store (it's a bit hard to find)

i've got a HP pavillion dv7 and it's amazing. you can get really good laptops from HP that aren't too expensive; especially with the discount i reckon you can find something.

I was just looking at that laptop I think, it comes with free studio headphones? Is it a good machine?

well there are different versions but the one i've got is amazing, it's just so fast and can actually handle doing several things at the same time - i can't stand computers that freeze!
i know lots of people say you don't need one that good for just basic things, and i don't know what all the specs really mean, but i do know that when i use my laptop, it's faster than when i use my other one which isn't as good. so i'm sticking to the superpower one! (mine's got an i7 processor, i don't care what people say i won't bother with less than an i5)

i3 will do everything, getting anything more powerful wouldn't really work, a quad core wouldn't be use to you as everything you use only utilise's a dual core not quad core. So you wont get any better performance
If i3 could do everything there wouldn't be i5 and i7

I meant in terms of his needs, an i3 will do everything , he isn't going to do any gaming, editing or using high end software which requires so much.
