Re: Technology 50 years from now
Putting a time frame on it is impossible, but the biggest change will obviously be with computers; televisions and PC monitors will quickly be fused into a single screen. With video calls being done through it, separate home telephones would be made unnecessary. Something like Google's Project Glass will replace mobile phones, and maybe even laptops, if enough hard drive memory could be fitted into something so small. After that, something like that could even replace television/computers entirely, if it could be given the capability of browsing webpages and watching videos, which it surely could.

It's hard to think what tasks machines wouldn't be able to do; everything from manufacturing, industry, transport, waste disposal, agriculture, administration could feasibly be almost fully automated. The number of human tasks therefore becomes very limited, really just to things like politics, medicine, lecturing, scientific research. Maybe employment to some extent would be optional, the economic benefit of machines doing so many tasks could allow for a massive welfare state, where many people just spend their lives pursuing hobbies. It's hard to imagine how else society could find a use for everyone. I also expect that most people will be vegetarian, or at least will eat artificially made meat.

Travel I don't see changing much, except the means of powering the vehicles. Though saying that I think the government will try to push people away from individual transport and towards things like electric trams for city travel and HSR for longer journeys.

In terms of space travel, I think humans will have walked on Mars by then, and we perhaps will be beginning to look at establishing laboratories on the moon and lunar mining (though a lot of legal problems regarding ownership of the resources lie ahead). I don't think anything will happen quickly in this regard though, progress has been sluggish ever since the moon landings and will surely continue to be so.

Apparently it will look like this:

Those screens really irritate me, I don't know why; maybe it's just that I have a headache at the minute but they look too colourful and disorganised. I couldn't imagine myself ever being able to work productively on them. Proper writing requires a blank word document.

the first major development will be energy

both batteries and electricity supplies will be developed.

this will increase the use of electric vehicles and will also increase the capabilities of hand held battery powered devices.

further than this i see a rise in eco/sustainable type design and technologies

i would also expect to see a rise in medical technologies such as new medicines and diagnostic techniques - pioneering surgeries too

as someone else has already mentioned.. space travel will also be common place, and we may well have walked on mars, but we will certainly have landed some thing on mars successfully.

computing will increase, and we will be able to store more data have faster download speeds etc etc, and the CD/DVD will no doubt be replaced with something else, robots and machines will be more widely used in industry, but i wouldnt think that they will be used in the home in 50 years as people will still be too skeptical about them. they will however replace many humans in the work place, thus more people will be unemployed, but the workplace will be a lot safer.

i hope not. That video was somewhat depressing. How her life revolved around a computer/everything digital! I hope the world doesn't go that way - it'd be a shame in my opinion. I think humans need to chill and take things as they come (re: check in when you get to a hotel, not whilst driving there - that's just too far in advance etc). I'm old fashioned
:yep: People will be socially disabled without that technology, which will cause even more socioeconomic stratification. :erm:

Tech from 50 years from now? Everyone with a PC will ditch windows and mac osx and move to linux because linux is 100 years away from mac and windows.

I don't think it really matters. Her life revolves around her life in my eyes. I can see the point your making but, honestly, I only ever view machines as tools. Albeit highly advanced ones.

I think I agree with you. I'm guessing though, when we've gotten to that stage, the interface will be completely customisable. Perhaps even automatically according to mood, professed likes and dislikes etc. The concept of both the Google and Microsoft projects seem pretty cool and now that two large technology corporations are working on them, it will hopefully spark some kind of competition so that we can see this coming out far faster.

I don't get if that's the future why are those technological products available today as clearly demonstrated by the video?

it's going to be ****ing awesome, things are getting good already. Above all I hope for something that can genuinely halt or slow down the aging process, rather than superficial cosmetic fixes.
