    What is Engineering Chartership?
I have seen something about chartership with certain Computer Science courses.

What is this and what will it do? Does it improve employment prospects?

    Re: What is Engineering Chartership?
In the United Kingdom, a Chartered Engineer is a professional engineer registered with Engineering Council UK (the British regulatory body for engineers). Contemporary Chartered Engineers are master's degree-qualified and have gained professional competencies through training and experience. The formation process (academic + internship / apprenticeship / graduate training + peer reviewed professional practice) of a Chartered Engineer spans 8–12 years. The title Chartered Engineer is protected by civil law but the practice of engineering has no legal restrictions in the UK. With over 180,000 registrants, it is one of the most recognizable international engineering qualifications with registrants in many countries.

Basically becoming a Chartered Engineer means you're recognised as a professional engineer who had the necessary qualifications and experience to gain this status.

Not everyone does get Chartered Engineer status, but it does make you more employable and top Engineering managers will almost certainly be chartered engineers.

    Hope that helps a bit!

So after a degree in CS which is an MEng. what would need to be done to become registered?

    Re: What is Engineering Chartership?
You'll need to contact the institution which accredits your MEng course, just to confirm this but this is my understanding of the process. (I'm doing this from an Engineering course p.o.v so it may be different for CS courses.)

Once you've done your MEng course, and you want to get chartership, contact your institute (you'll most likely need to be a member, or get membership if you haven't already.)

They'll 'assign' you a mentor, who will be a Chartered Engineer member of the institute who will be there to give you advice over the next four years. If you keep up with necessary reports, gain the right sort of experience, take advice from your mentor, you'll be fine.

After four years (minimum) you'll be able to apply for chartered status which may involve writing a report of your work or a specfic project you've been doing to demonstrate that you're worthy of the status. There may also be an interview in front of a panel, who'll decide if you can get chartered status. Then, if they accept you, you'll get some sort of notification and certificate, most likely in the post and then you can have the letters CEng after your name!

Like I said, this is my understanding of how it works for the insititute that accredits my course (IET, Institute of Engineering Technology) but of course it could be a little different for CS. Best thing to do would be to email the insitute that will accredit your course for more info. Most likely it'll be the BCS (British Computer Society) or something similiar.

Getting chartership basically takes about the same amount of time it does to become a proffessional doctor.
