Why do we have black history month and not white history month?
In my opinion Black History Month is actually kind of racist as there isn't a White History Month. To be honest major achievements and discoveries have been made by both races.
Tell me what you think?

Re: Why do we have black history month and not white history month?
Black history month is something most people, black and white can see should be abolished. It was started with good intent, but really has no place. History is history and should be taught when and where it fits the syllabus, not depending on race.
Just as the argument how come you get a black history month and we don't get a white history month, there is the argument why is black history confined to only 1 month of the year?
I would also point out Black History month was informal long before it was officially recognised by either US or UK governments. If you so wish you can start a white history month. -

Re: Why do we have black history month and not white history month?
Dumb question is dumb. Not sure I can even be bothered to dignify this troll with a proper response

There are other questions about BHM which can initiate interesting debates but why it was founded as opposed to WHM ... it's like you know nothing whatsoever about history. -
Re: Why do we have black history month and not white history month?Quite a while, Gov officially recognised it in 1995(?). I never had any Black History Month classes in my school which is 99% white, but my Uncle who is a teacher said they make quite a big deal of it where he is. They lay on special classes and watch videos and what not, he's from Finsbury Park. I think its mainly in areas with a high portion of black students where it is acknowledged.(Original post by Dirac Delta Function)
we have a black history month? When did this happen? -
Yh I'm quite sure I know enough about history, I know about major historical events both including black and whites. But this still doesn't justify why there is a black history month.(Original post by Evangelica)

Furthermore, this is a serious question and not just a case of trolling. Also I'm not sitting here going through 100's of threads about BHM.
Thanks

"Black History Month had its beginnings in 1926 in the United States, when historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History announced the second week of February to be "Negro History Week". This week was chosen because it marked the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Woodson created the holiday with the hope that it eventually be eliminated when black history became fundamental to American history.
In short it was created in order to highlight the roles of black figures in history in a society where they were ignored. -

Re: Why do we have black history month and not white history month? Why don't we have "Son's Day" and "Daughter's Day" as well as "Mother's Day" and "Father's Day". Even though parents have done momentous things such as keeping the family afloat, that injection the son had a few years ago was incredibly brave so why don't we honour that?(Original post by Ohgodalevels)

Re: Why do we have black history month and not white history month? There is the problem of how it is going to be removed. For a white politician that is surely career suicide, regardless of his reasons the media will spin it the wrong way. For a black politician, it is a risky thing as many would label him a traitor or a sell out, removing something which acknowledges his origins.(Original post by Mr Einstein)

I think it would be far more beneficial to have a month dedicated to the Empire. This would encompass much of the commonwealth and as such places like Jamaica, but also include India and others. I think educating many on the origins of our nation and on why many immigrants came to Britain would be beneficial, certainly more relevant than the US civil rights movement. -
Re: Why do we have black history month and not white history month?I was going to say exactly this too!(Original post by Barden)
We have a White History 11 Months...
I'm not sure how much I personally agree with it, but it's a common argument I hear. -
Re: Why do we have black history month and not white history month? On the face of it, it does seem unfair when you compare the two. But if you could be bothered to dig a bit deeper and look at the roots of it, it began at a time when black history/culture etc was ignored completely and racism was still very much officially endorsed. Obviously now it has less significance as domestic racism is not as prevalent and not as accepted as it once was.(Original post by Scott1541)
White History Month would be considered racist...
(You know it's true
