Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already there)
Welcome to the University of Sheffield forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything from the Arts Tower and the Union, to the Crookesmoor Moors.

Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already thereThis is very true. There's a large Chinese/Korean community in Sheffield which is somewhat the university's doing as it has a top Korean studies department. There's also definately a black-African community but these are generally confined to specific areas, Burngreave in particular, which is not a place I would recommend visiting. (And before everyone cries racist it's not my fault the government doesn't care about this part and the country and has allowed deprivation levels to soar all over the city.)(Original post by hannah60000)
I know what you meant I was just saying it appeared to me there is a stronger East Asian community than a South one
FYI I don't go to Sheffield Uni but have lived here all my life... -
Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already there(Original post by Lee.Shaw)
Theres not a buzz as theres no students there.
Sheffield has over 40,000 - 50,000 students with the two universities. If you are still unsure, visit it when the students are back. And you are right about 'it's more like a town'. Sheffield is often compared to a village / small town - its characteristics are different to that of other cities in the sense it isn't large, its centre lacks retail (made up at Meadowhall) and multiple other factors.
Oh that explains it! Well I'm thinking of definitely coming to revisit Sheffield again, The next open day is on the 04th of September, will students be back by then? Or would I be better off booking a private tour? I'm also going to visit the Hallam University in October, so would it be better for me to book a tour at Sheffield Uni then too?(Original post by coleee)
I just finished my first year at sheffield and I did think it was odd they were doing tours when none of us students are there! Sheffield has a great vibe, the student union is repeatedly voted one of the best and usually lots is going on around the union.
What you said about it not seeming diverse, again might be because of when you visited. There are lots of different nationalities etc which can be seen by the vast amount of ethnic food shops/related societies.
Obviously i'm biased but Sheffield is such a friendly city, and whilst it's not as busy as London the majority of people there are the students, which gives it a great atmosphere...when the students are actually there!
Sigh! Maybe that's the case.(Original post by hannah60000)
No I just think maybe Sheffield may not be what your looking for it does not make you naive though.
Yeah I went on the Saturday the 7th one, I'm looking for 2013 entry
Yourself?
Yeah I would call Sheffield a town it is not just the amount of people in a place that makes a city...it just did not have a city vibe to me. I think it may take some adjusting coming from London but it should be fine I guess once one is accustom to it......
Where else have you been or looking at them?
I'm 2013 entry too!
I've been looking at UCL and Kent so far (as well as sheffield)! I'm hoping to visit manchester as well.. the idea of it raining freqently throughout most the year is a little bit off putting but who knows, it may be the one! Where else are you looking at?
See, ethnic products really are important!(Original post by Naami)
I'm in same position as OP, although I'm Asian-Muslim.
I was wondering if there are any ethnic grocer shops/markets where I could buy produce and spices as well as halal meat? I went to the open day on Saturday but didn't see any halal restaurants/butchers or asian shops as I went through the city.
I totally understand the need for spices and stuff.. My mum is suggesting brings them for me when she visits lol.
Are you 2013 entry? -

intro week starts on the 17th september and regular uni the following monday (24th september).

Thanks again!

Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already thereWow, you're the first person I've come across who has firmed a university without visiting first! I'm the same(Original post by Terra.Vita)
I just got in, but I've been routinely tearing up apart their website and whatnot to find out more about Sheffield.
So far, all I can say is I'm in love with the place even though I've never been there. First time I will visit Sheffield is when I will start uni.

no worries!(Original post by smartieslover)

don't quite understand it as well, though. probably not the best approach for showing off how 'buzzing' sheffield actually is.
i haven't visited either(Original post by Hazletts)

wanted to, but it didn't really work out in terms of flights... so i was just like yeah, whatever. sheffield sounds lovely and the pictures on flickr suggested the same. it's (hopefully) gonna be fiiiine haha

Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already thereFair enough is it better than SOAS as it suppose to be very good for Chinese, Korean and Japanese studies?? Nonetheless the department is one of the best the country offers(Original post by Muddy_Hands)

Well largely compared to London the black population cannot be that big??
Well deprivation is everywhere is it really that bad and I'm sure and surely not only blacks in impoverish areas.....
So you live in Sheffield how would you describe the vibe etc, especially when uni students are around are you in Uni already where do you go, if not where do you think you will apply?

Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already thereWell so far I've considered LSE, Cambridge along with Sheffield but I also like the looks of Manchester and Nottingham's course as well as Edinburgh :s still deciding really(Original post by smartieslover)

I know quite a few people who like Kent appears to be quite popular! What course you planning to do again?
Regarding ethnic food I'm sure you'll be fine Sainbury's and Tesco have expanded there range if your in need, but you could always bring a stash with you

Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already thereI am Caribbean and I'm not too worried. There is an society for African and Caribbean people anyway, so even if there isn't LOADS of Caribbean people, I'm sure we'll be able to meet some through that(Original post by smartieslover)
Yes I am black Afro-Caribbean, sigh, its not a bad thing, it's just a factor its missing compared to a uni closer to me. I agree! When I went there it wasn't very city like, I really liked that!! It wasn't " crazy rushhour " kinda feeling like London! Thanks for the map!
Nowhere in England will be as multicultural as London, but from what I've heard Sheffield isn't too prejudiced/racist so we should be fine.

Nice ones! Your aiming high, thats really good!

I've been thinking about Cambridge too, a lot. It was one of the ones that was kinda tricky :/. I think I'm just a really indecisive person lol. Dont worry we have the summer to think ever more about it. Started on your personal statement yet?
Kent is really lovely apparently, and I like the idea of a single site kinda campus. Defo, a place to visit (Y)
I'm hoping to do architecture
and you?
Good old supermarkets
ahaha, that's my mum's plans for me lol. I'm gonna be on the train with all purpose seasoning in my bag haha.
I guess thats true too!(Original post by musicstudent)

I know, it's just a big culture shock but because Sheffield people are really lovely and friendly (believe me, I spoke to quite a few strangers that day, and they were sweet and not mental), it'll be alright adjusting!
Are you going this September, or 2013?
And for what course?

Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already thereHey before I came to university I didn't really like Sheffield but as soon as I moved in I liked it. There is an ACS (though its mostly african dominated so you may feel out of place if you are caribbean I know I felt out of place) When you get here race doesn't matter. You find friends. Most people are just normal towards you although I have has 3 cases or racism but that is just me. Most of the time it becomes just another home. To buy ethnic food there is a stall in the market (castle market, indoor market, meat market, closes 4pm) that sells yams, plantains, hair products, etc... There is also a hair shop in town opposite mcdonalds called julia knows that sells hair products. If you like RnB etc. Jabcosa (a bar by west st Tesco) has chocolate Tuesdays club night. If you feel you want to have another look then do so but don't let relatively minor matters like 'fitting in' stop you from going to a good university. You will get idiots (I've experienced my fear share) but the beauty of uni you surround yourself with people you want to be with and can ignore the others even if you live with them. Moving out and going to uni in a different environment is quite interesting but is also liberating(Original post by smartieslover)
Basically I just wanted to know how did you know Sheffield was the uni for you? Did anyone have to revisit to confirm it?
I went to their open day on Friday and I felt everything was NICE, like superDUPER NICE. (the people :'), the space, the accommodation, my course lecturers except from one boring one) But I didn't feel any buzz or vibe. It was a rainy day though. Is it just because it was raining? Or could it be, it's just not the place for me? Would you advice me to visit again?
Also is the university quite diverse (please dont penalise me for this). Like I went and only saw 4 black people. LOL but everyone was lovely apart from 1or2 people who gave me odd looks. :/
I just dont want to be a minority! Also are there places where I can buy ethnic food and products?I went into the city and thought "yea this is cool , just like London, jus not as busy ! Greatstuff"
Well let me know please.
I think going to Sheffield kinda made me more confused if anything.
Ps. Thanks in advance.

Book a private tour for now, if your accepted your department should also invite you to see the uni again, normally when students are actually there. -

Re: Sheffield university .... ( People who are going and People who are already there
Don't worry about fitting in. There's an Afro-Caribbean Society if you want to hang with people from your home culture, but you'll make plenty of friends, regardless of race. If you meet the right people you might even be able to introduce them to your cuisine, I know I'd love to learn more about it.
Speaking of which, there's also an International Food Festival that helps celebrate different cultures and foods, so that might be a good thing to help out with if you want to meet people with a similar background!
There are a couple of shops with ethnic foods. Castle Market is probably a good place to go as they tend to stock a wide variety of foods. Otherwise you could always ask at restaurants where they stock their ingredients from/if they know any local establishments, which was my original plan when I wanted to cook something using harissa paste. If not, some hunting online and in supermarkets should turn up results.
The rain does tend to dull the vibe, although it hasn't rained that much this year (bar June)!
The same with the lack of students - I'm not sure you'll ever really get the true vibe of a place until you've started there, but as a general rule if you like... well, basically everything about a place, that's the best place to start. I visited my department on an overcast day and had a similar feeling to you, as opposed to when I visited Warwick when it was blazing with sunshine and students were milling about.
Revisit if you're not sure, don't worry about diversity (and as for the odd looks, don't worry too much - plenty of people have been on the receiving end of them, so it might have nothing to do with your race) and ultimately, have fun. There's so much that you like about the university, so I'd still keep it very high on your list if I were you.

I'm not too bothered about making friends, because I'm a bit of a "chatterbox"

*claps hands* Well I hope there are lots of open minded people like you! I'd probably definitely want to do that, Ijust have to master the kitchen
Thanks actually a good idea, although I only really saw chinese take aways tbh!
I'm definitely going to revisit. Funnily enough even though the weather kindof sucked, its the university thats doing the best of the list I've visited...
