    Turning off TV at night
Apart from saving electricity does it help increase the life span of a TV?

It is a HD LG FULL TV with a back light.

Do all HD TVs have a back light or is it only full hd tvs?

It potentially saves some power and removes a potential fire risk although there might be a question of how much.

Again it's probably debatable as to how it might affect the life span.

In terms of backlight. All LCD/LED screens have some sort of backlight (or side light). This is what allows you to see the image. The difference between LCD/LED is what produces the light. In LCD it's Cold Cathode lights (CCFL) and in LED it's LED's

It is hard to say whether turning a TV off completely will have an impact on its lifespan as there is no definite period in which any electronic device will fail. If two TVs made in the same factory at the same time with the same quality of components and that are identical were sold, one could fail in the first few months and the other could survive for in excess of 5 years.

LCD TVs and monitors can be either CCFL or LED backlit

I know it's a horrible blending of technologies / terms. But generally if it's CCFL lit it's called an LCD TV and if it's LED lit it's called an LED TV. Even though they both use LCD to create the image and it's the lighting that's different.

There are also real LED displays where each pixel is made up from LED's but those are the types of displays used at big outdoor events.

So turning it off once a night doesn't do any harm?

Shouldn't do any harm and if you've got switches you can use to turn stuff off then that's not too bad. I tend to leave most stuff on standby but then the sockets here are pretty old (single 13A socket and 2 3A sockets with no switch)
