Best psychological thrillers?
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Best psychological thrillers?
I'd like to watch some films with clever plot twists along the lines of Shutter Island, Seven, Brick, Black Swan, Fight Club, Inception etc or even Donnie Darko. Preferably not too gory or creepy to be horror..
Anyone got any suggestions? I saw the trailer for We Need to Talk About Kevin, does anyone know if it's any good?
Thanks in advance

I love films like this too. My favourite film of all time is a tale of two sisters, it's South Korean so if you don't mind subtitles then it's well worth a watch. Another good, weird film is Mulholland drive, Naomi Watts is in it but don't let that put you off, lol

I just re-read your post and noticed you didn't want creepy. A tale of two sisters is creepy in places, especially one scene so if you don't want that then maybe leave it it out, but it is such a good movie and you will NEVER guess the twist.
If I was at my parents house I could look through my DVDs and name you about 15 good 'twisty' movies!

Re: Best psychological thrillers?
I know someones already said it and +1 to them but I LOVED 'number 23' although it totally screws with your head afterwards lol
You say you don't like horror but you list 'seven' in your favourites? lol
If you havn't seen the hannibal movies then they are brilliant and they're not really that gory. Not in the same league as the saw films or anything like that anyway. They're all good but for the psychological angle I recommend silence of the lambs and the original red dragon which is actually called 'man hunter'. It's absolutely brilliant. I did forensic science and my lecturer showed it to us and got us to write notes on it so it's obviously fairly realistic from the psychological point of view. It's really interesting to see how the main guy in it (a criminal profiler) gets into the mindset of the killer to try to work out who he is and what he's doing next etc. I definitely recommend that one!
Hide and seek is a really good one and it's more of a thriller than a horror. I guess most people have seen it but 'the village' was a brilliant movie. Gothika is a horror I guess but not a very scary one and that's quite psychological because Halle Berry plays a sort of criminal psychologist (as far as I could tell) in it.
Also if you can handle a really disturbing film then 'martyrs' is good. It's french with english subtitles and it's really weird. In concept I guess it's vaguely similar to hostel in that people are captured and tortured in a secret location but with a big psychological angle because the people are held captive and sort of experimented on. It goes into post traumatic stress and the hallucinations of people who have been put through the worst things imaginable. It's incredibly nasty and even I found it difficult to watch at times. It has very graphic torture scenes in it and it really sticks in your mind afterwards. It's quite arty though in a funny kind of way, no hollywood crap. Brilliant acting in it and it's all about the human condition and the limits that we have before we go crazy.
Here's a quote from martyrs I found online: 'Lucie was only a victim. Like all the others. It's so easy to create a victim, young lady, so easy. You lock someone in a dark room. They begin to suffer. You feed that suffering. Methodically, systematically and coldly. And make it last. Your subject goes through a number of states. After a while, their trauma; that small, easily opened crack, makes them see things that don't exist.'
So yeah.. watch it if you dare! Don't be ashamed to give in and turn it off though because apparently people walked out to throw up when it was shown at frightfest (horror film festival). -
Re: Best psychological thrillers?Yeah haha, I think that's about as gruesome as I can go! For some of it I had to look away but I did like the storyline alot, especially the ending :')(Original post by littleone271)
