    French - Please help, what do I need?!
    Hi, i've recently finished my GCSE French course, and i need to know what i need in the exams to get an A or even an A*

    The course is broken into 4 sections; Speaking, listening, reading and writing

    where speaking and writing are 30 % each and reading and listening are 20% each

    Writing grades
    1.) A* - 28/30
    2.) A* - 28/30

    Speaking grades
    1.) A - 23/30
    2.) A - 23/30

    So what would i need in the exams (reading and listening) to get an A overal or an A* overall thankyou so much

    It's hard to say really, because the grade boundaries won't be set until the summer. Also remember that the marks and grades you have been given for your controlled assessment are provisional and subject to moderation from the exam board. You do have good results in these though, and generally people equal or do better in the reading and listening papers so I wouldn't worry. Good luck!

    At GCSE to get an A you need 80% overall and to get an A* you need 90%. However, these percentages are in terms of UMS (a way of scaling your mark so that yearly variations in difficulty don't affect what people get) rather than raw mark, making it difficult to predict exactly what you'd need. Don't worry about it, you'll find out soon enough!

    Unit 2 = 46/60 raw mark = 75/90 UMS
    Unit 4 = 58/60 raw mark = 90/90 UMS

    ============

    if 270 UMS = A*, you would need 105 UMS which would be say 53 UMS in Unit 1, 53 UMS in Unit 3, so;

    Unit 1 (Listening) = 27/40 = 53/60 UMS
    Unit 3 (Writing) = 31/40 = 53/60 UMS

    If 240 UMS = A, you would need 75 UMS which would be say 38 UMS in Unit 1 and 38 UMS in Unit 3, so;

    Unit 1 (Listening) = 18/40 raw mark = 38/60 UMS
    Unit 3 (Writing) = 19/40 raw mark = 38/60 UMS

    Based on the boundaries from Summer 2011.

    So, i think there is a good chance you have definately got an A, if not an A*!
