Whether they appeal or not to a university depends on which course you're applying for. Again, different subjects present different types of opportunities; I wouldn't say one opens more doors than the other.

Personally I'd do economics and philosophy, but that's just out of personal interest.

Although it is important to be thinking about what universities want, I'd advise to you to just follow your interests, because that will ultimately lead you to a degree you're interested in. Everything else will sort itself out. (Because if you're applying for something you're interested in as a result of your studies, you've already got the a-levels in the related subjects and so on.. )

    Hey thanks for the response.
    I'm not sure about the kind of career I wish to go into.. so by doing different subjects;
I'm leaving options open for eg. I'm doing a science plus humanities etc.

For some reason Philosophy and Economics sounds more appealing.. I don't know if that's just me? but obviously there all quite similar.

It does depend on what you want to do, but I think Geography tends to open up a couple more doors? The reason being that Economics doesn't seem to be able to be applied to many things. It can be a great supplement to go with other subjects like Maths and Politics, for example, when applying for a Politics degree (for example, again), but isn't necessary for any degrees as it isn't always taught at A level everywhere in the country. Geography is generally offered everywhere, so a Geography degree will normally ask for Geography, whereas an Economics degree normally won't ask for Economics.

Other than that slight difference, there isn't much in it and I'd choose the one you think you might like more.

I'm doing Religious Studies for A level, but within the A level I sit two papers: One is philosophy and one is ethics. So, even though I do RS, we still do Philosophy within it and actually I really enjoy Ethics as well. It probably fits in well if you want to do something like Medicine (in the off chance?).

However, my board also has a whole other selection of papers to do instead of Philosophy and Ethics. Some college might take the Philosophy and Islam papers, or the Ethics and Christianity papers. We just so happen to take the Philosophy and Ethics combination. It's worth checking what combination your school or college offers (I'm on OCR, so if your college offers a different board then check the specification). If your college offers a large chunk of RS as Philosophy, perhaps consider taking RS.

If RS at your college is more focused on studying religious teachings and doesn't focus on Philosophy as such, then I'd opt for Philosophy. Philosophy provides you with a few more skills and, like with English or History, provides good evidence you can analyse texts and give a good argument which Universities love to see

    Hi, Lou !

Thanks for your really helpful response.

I still haven't decided what college I'm going to. But one of them is more Religion based - so there's a lot of focus on Christianity and Islam. Whereas another one is the same as yours and
is split into two units (Philosophy and Ethics).

My teachers have advised me to go for RE. I think I'd prefer it? but just the thought of Philosophy being more appealing is what interests me?
I guess that's something I have to personally figure out over the summer!

In regards to Geography Vs Economics.. it's the same issue.. which is more appealing?

Economics just sounds better. However I do Geography now and I do enjoy it.
I also do Business as well.. I think that contributed towards my interest in the world and the economy.

The bigger question for me now is Geography or Economics? - Do you know which is harder?

I did get some A-Level books in both.. so I'm going to have a look through them and see which subject I'd like to study vigorously over the next two years.

Economics is more respected than Geography. The people who take Geog at my school do so as its an easy A.
What are your other subject choices?
