So what about the vast nuclear arsenals they had aimed at each other, the huge regional power blocs they over saw and of course the fact the 'cold' war very nearly turned scorching hot on several occasions?
i think eventually both would have got sick of it
they would still keep there guns aimed ready to fire any minute but there would have been less hostility and tension as times would have forced some sort of amendments.

even Mikhail Gorbachev the man who dissolved the soviet union and stated he never intended it to happen but simply wanted to give the people of soviet a combination of democracy and communism while still keeping thew soviet intact.

Vladimir Putin has stated that the dissolving of the soviet was the most significant, influential, and reprimanding event of the 21st century

However, if you look at how the USSR got their behinds handed to them by the Afghans, their away record is rather patchy. This is further backed up by their defeat to Finland in 1940.
The US didn't really do much better... Bay of Pigs, Vietnam...

I don't believe living in a bipolar world is ideal for world peace, if anything it just causes more conflict between those two powers in the form of proxy wars. What we should aim for is greater power, influence and co-operation in UN to intervene and stop conflicts, rather than any single country being the predominate player on the world stage.

Good idea, just not practical. Look at current situation in Syria, no UN cooperation at all

Yeah that is true, but in reality more effort could be done to try agree on issues rather than the tic for tat politics we see at the security council, even the general assembly are starting to get fed up of them.

I doubt it, it kept some of their largest industries booming. theres a good reason why the Americans and Russians are the two largest weapons manufacturers/exporters in the world plus the sheer ideological divide between them was/is insurmountable take the current 'communist' states the USAs attitude to them is rather frosty...

With regards to Mr Putins statement, its debateable... it certainly cost Russia alot their economy tanked right after the collapse of the USSR, poorer citizens noticed their quality of living go through the flaw etc. but on that some citizens have seen their living standards go through the roof, their are slightly more rights there than their used to be etc. Also considering Putins old employer was the communist government, well...
