How many teachers have had a positive impact on your life?

I came across this video and it made me wonder how many teachers have had a positive impact on your life. For me it's about 5 maybe 6. And what makes a good teacher a good teacher. For me it's teachers that show a genuine interest and a genuine passion for the subject they teach. They don't just teach you what the textbook says they will go above and beyond and create and contribute to interesting discussions that make you think. I also think a little bit of humour in the classroom atmosphere is essential not too much just enough to make a friendly atmosphere but maintain that teacher-student relationship.

I have three, and I've met them all during Sixth Form - and only one of them is a subject teacher. They are my Chemistry teacher, my form tutor and the deputy head of VI Form.
It's hard to describe why, really. With my Chemistry teacher, he took a genuine interest in my education and went above and beyond, giving up his free time to help; my exam was on a Wednesday, so he spent *all* of Monday and Tuesday with me and other students, making sure we were fully prepared. Before the exam, he came round giving out "good luck sweets" (fruit pastilles) but accidentally missed me out. He felt so bad about it, he hunted me down the next day to give me a huge bag of them :P Little things, you know?

My form tutor and deputy head of VI Form are just pretty amazing people.
My form tutor doesn't like playing things exactly by the book, and I like that. He essentially sticks his two fingers up to Ofsted and isn't afraid to tell things how it is. He's also always up for a chat, and doesn't care if you take the piss out of him - because he'll do it back, but make it twice as insulting  We've exchanged email addresses to keep in contact as he's retiring.

The Dep. head of VI Form is another "above and beyond" type. He's the one who dealt with my uni application, as I applied for medicine - but as I got rejected from them all, he's helping me plan my gap year. He has so many contacts with random people and always puts out feelers if he thinks he knows someone who can help. Am also keeping in contact with him - in fact, I'm going to the pub with him on Thursday.

I'm currently in year 11, and so far I can say none have. I feel that my education and relationship with teachers has been very impersonal so far. One teacher I have had for 5 years and he still is unsure of my name. Hopefully this will change in sixth form.

Re: How many teachers have had a positive impact on your life?
Im in secondary and I can say maybe 2/3...
    Not many...

Irony is, one of them is a teacher that I had a massive disagreement with for the best part of a year and we ended up being forced to talk to each other in an office (more to it than that, not going to go into it)

But now we get on so well and its made a positive impact on me because I guess it taught me how people can change, and showed me that sometimes people DO mean it when they apologise to you and it also taught me how to forgive people easier and the art of being polite to people, when really you want to punch them in the face.

That had a positive impact on me because it taught me a lot and she is genuinely a great teacher. It also showed me that some teachers actually DO care about their students, which is something I had struggled believing- possibly on account of one of my other teachers turning out to be a paedo-

    The other one.....
-One was just an amazing teacher and a great person. He checked up on me when he didnt have to regarding the issues I had with the other teacher and told me he was always there for a chat if I had issues with her. Considering he is her best friend, that was pretty decent of him.

Zero, :erm: Never really had great relationships with my teachers, I tended to just blend into the background at school so I doubt many of them knew who I was!

3 or 4 of them. Most recent being the teacher I had at college last year. She was exellent, created a good atmosphere, was interested in her subject and helped me immensely with my UCAS application. She even gave me some of her old textbooks.

I'd say one in primary school and one in secondary school. I had some others who were fantastic teachers but I wouldn't say they impacted on my life, as such.

Ironically enough, both the aforementioned tutors were very encouraging and inspiring about English Lit. I got swayed away by music though :musicus:

I would say 4. Two at my high school who gave me such confidence and believed in me with my Maths and two at college - I have just finished my first year. My Art teacher and my ICT teacher have both been amazing and I've thoroughly enjoyed having them teach me this past year. My Art teacher will have sadly left when I return for A2 but I hope that I have my ICT teacher again next year. So badly.

Positive impact? I'm not too sure really. I have had some good teachers but I can't really remember many that had a lasting impact on my life.

It's quite sad thinking about it

The teachers at my school always preferred the chavs. I think this was because, although annoying and disruptive, when quiet, they were generally more outgoing and so the communication is greater.

If my experience is universal, then it's a great tragedy for the quieter, non-disruptive students.

Two had a big impact - One was my Maths teacher for five years and form tutor for 3. She was really quite a strict teacher, not everyone liked her. I got on well with her though, I understood her teaching style so I think she warmed to me. Having her as a form tutor as well helped massively - She was a bit more laid back there and I could get more help on what is now my main focus on life, Maths.

The other taught me Politics for 2 years at A Level. He was brilliant. Enthusiastic, hilarious, genuinely interesting and entertaining. If you had any problems on his course or even with anything he could help with, he'd do it in a shot. I had a tough time at sixth form, but he was teaching my most interesting course and actually made some of my experiences at Sixth Form feel worthwhile.

Re: How many teachers have had a positive impact on your life?
I'd say there are two who really stand out:

In high school, I was a proper little bastard if I'm honest. It's pretty embarrassing when I think back now but I almost got thrown out... My year 11 maths teach is to thank for getting me on the straight and narrow really. To actually sit me down and tell me that I would be getting nowhere in life if I didn't sort myself out right now was a huge wake up call. I started committing to all my subjects and went for the best grades I could get. Surprised myself with the end results

In college, my Politics teacher gave me a ton of advice and was someone who I could always go to with any problems I had. She advised me on what to do when I wanted to come back to retake my A2s and was key in getting me back into Sixth Form. She was good banter too!

My two history teachers in Sixth Form were probably the best teachers I've had.

One, while being a fantastic teacher, helped me a lot with my UCAS application and went out of her way to get to know everybody in the class personally which created a great environment.

The other was so passionate about History that it was hard not to be myself, this enthusiasm and great teaching will of no doubt dragged my grades up in the subject.

I'd say about 10% of them, the majority were negative or had no influence. The ones that had a positive impact stand out a lot more to me, because they were few and far between.

I didn't realise how big an impact my old head of sixth form had on me until he passed away. He took time to get to know me as a person, and was always spot on in his judgements of me - reminding me when I was being too hard on myself or being too much of a perfectionist.

I've had 2. Both were absolutely amazing and inspiring in ways I cannot even begin to describe in words. What I do know is that I owe them a great deal, a debt which I hope I can reply later in life - even if that is just showing how their inspiration fuelled me to do greater things in life.

Easily my german teacher, the woman was beyond amazing.

Not many can say they lived their life quite like her. She was originally South African, exceptionally wealthy, but she fell in love with her black cleaner, (who was a similar age) they got married secretly whilst the Apartheid was going on. He got arrested, didn't see each other for 10 years until they fled the country. Her life was actually like a film.

She gave me insane levels of support and helped me get an A* in German -she was just an amazing woman in my eyes. Gettin stupidly emotional as I write this. Shortly after I left, she developed cancer, but she managed to beat it. I heard and straight away went to visit her and she broke down. This was so surreal, because she was a pretty emotionally strong person. She said: 'I'm so proud of your achievements, did you hear about my cancer? I beat it!.' She had lost her hair and **** loads of weight, and all I could reply was that after the life she had lived, I expected nothing less from her. Couple of months later, the cancer was back -but it had seriously spread. She lost her battle but her memory will always live on.

She's what I call a proper teacher, someone who cared outside the realms of their subject/classroom. She changed my life and gave me a real perspective on things.

    EDIT: Negged for what exactly?
