Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off Twitter
They'd have a field day with my friends - one thought Scotland was 'down south', another thought China and Japan were the same country, and another didn't know where Africa was.
One dumb tweet is not as bad as one tweet which victimizes and insults another. Unfortunately, there wasn't just one of the victimising tweets, there were thousands. I hate people sometimes

Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off TwitterI had no idea there was a golf tournament in somewhere I had no idea was a place(Original post by Snagprophet)
I can understand someone not knowing that Wimbledon became a part of London in the 60s but how can someone not know it's where the competition is held? Idiot. It's like asking if the Carnoustie golf competition is held in Carnoustie. lol

Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off TwitterShe's an idiot for not Googling it. She deserves what she got.(Original post by JordanS94)
Well people are cruel
she's a football fan not a tennis fan. There have been dumber and more important things said before, like someone on my facebook a few months asked 'Who is Hitler?' and they were being serious
that is much worse than that and they didn't get attacked much, and they learnt something. People should answer the question so that these simple naive questions don't get asked again.

Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off TwitterWell that's irrelevant because this person was aware of the Wimbledon tennis tournament.(Original post by The Troll Toll)

Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off Twitter
TBF the stupidest comment I have seen was from someone who should know better and it was this
Someone from North Shields calling someone from South Shields a mackemBlef, from North Shields, said: 'You can always rely on mackems to amuse you with their total stupidity!!! Lol RT @Georgia_Ford Is wimbledon always held in London?'
In all fairness I know most people are like Well she should have known better e.t.c. but yeah as we found out it hasn't ALWAYS been at Wimbledon just like I bet she'd find it a dumb question if someone asked 'Has Sunderland FC always played at the Stadium of Light?' We all have dumb moments even with the power of the internet.
A girl I was talking to was adamant the UK owned China, when someone told her we only owned Hong Kong (or used to) she goes 'Well I was still right since it's in China.' -
Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off Twitter
Mocking those who arent knowledgeable who have just asked a simple question....Proof the internet has its fair share of arrogant pricks in it, who need to get over themselves. hell even tsr has options for twitter and facebook, im curious about how many people have actually used it. i havent.

She's an idiot for not Googling it. She deserves what she got.
Asked a harmless question
OR
Forced off twitter -
Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off TwitterCommon sense tells you that if you don't know something, Google it. And forced off Twitter? Doesn't she have a backbone?(Original post by Fusion)
I don't know which is more trivial:
Asked a harmless question
OR
Forced off twitter
Stupidity should not become a highly regarded trait. -
Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off Twitter
This tweet was actually retweeted into my timeline, and a lot of celebs were commenting on it. This happens a lot on Twitter, and people are "forced" into deleting their account. It's really nothing new. People are "forced" off for all sorts of reasons.

Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off Twitter
What a lame non-story. Let me tell you a story. There are some posters in the local Jobcentre which say "Did you know? You can look for jobs online?"
Not knowing how the **** to use a question mark properly is stupid. I don't think her question is notably dumb at all. -
Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off Twitter(Original post by Roy064)
She is on the internet, using Google would have been a better way to get her question answered. Frankly, no sympathy.
EDIT: Above post just nailed it, making mine redundant.(Original post by Rooster523)
google?(Original post by Algorithm69)
It was an easy question to answer. All she needed to do was type the question into google or search wikipedia. I feel no sympathy for her or any hatred towards her responders. If you choose to show your naivety on such an open and public forum you must accept the consequences.(Original post by im so academic)

I've never liked this response. It's a cop-out to justify the bullying of someone. Yes she could have googled it; yes it would have saved her all this harassment. Does that justify bullying? No. I guarantee 99% of the people giving her **** have asked an equally "daft" question. I know that I have and I bet the four of you have, too. It's this kind of humiliation people receive that makes me wait until I get home to Google things vehemently as opposed to asking one of my peers.
There's nothing wrong with admitting ignorance. To the British population, the location of Wimbledon is pretty common knowledge. There are always going to people who don't know it, though. There's an xkcd for every situation.
The only reason I know where Wimbledon is located is because I've been watching the tennis tournaments there since 2008 and they mentioned it on commentary. I had no express desire to go find out: I neither wanted to watch a match in Wimbledon, or play there. Had it not been for mentions on commentary, I would be as equally ignorant as this girl, and the only reason I'm not ignorant is because I'm a tennis fan. A person who has never been to London or studied a map of London, doesn't like tennis, and hasn't been in the situation to hear it in conversation isn't going to know where Wimbledon is. Ignorance is not tantamount to stupidity. If the knowledge isn't delivered to a person, then of course they're not going to know it.
I know **** all about F1 and I know **** all about golf; my dad is big fans of both. I ask questions to him that he has a fan of the sports would find just as ignorant as the question this girl asked here. Similarly, my dad is equally ignorant of many of my interests. He'd never respond to one of my questions like this, and if I responded to one of his like that I'd get the **** beat out of me.
There's nothing wrong with asking a question, having the means to Google it does not mean that by asking the question publicly you deserve to be bullied and humiliated. -
Re: Massive backlash to dumb question forces 21-year-old off TwitterIf you ask a stupid question on a PUBLIC social network, what the hell do you expect to happen? I've asked stupid questions, but damn right I would accept the fact it was stupid of me to do so.(Original post by Hype en Ecosse)

During the world wars it was held outside London and wimbledon was part of Surrey before 1965.
