As level choices for management based degree
I wish to study a management type degree at a decent (top 20) uni. My current choices are politics, philosophy, business studies and design.

These are only AS choices but is business studies and design likely to hinder my application, as these are 'less academic' subjects

I took business studies at AS, it was tedious, take economics instead.
I would also recommend taking English or History as well.

Whether it would hinder your application depends on where you apply, and for exactly what course, but I would lean towards yes.

What if I took all 4 through to a level, is that likely to make a difference? I thought about doing economics but thought it looked pretty difficult without the gcse.

You have no hard A Levels.

Philosophy and Design will be seen as particularly weak, whilst politics isn't seen that highly.

I did A level Physics, Maths and Business. The strong subjects (Maths and Physics) more than made up for the weak subject (Business) but unless your predicted A*s and have a very strong personal statement with excellent extra-curricular activities I think you'll struggle.

You should probably switch one subject either a science, English or Maths.

But remember, there's no point in doing something you dont enjoy.

    Hey.
No, most universities are fine with just 3 full A-levels.
I really would recommend changing business studies or product design.
Philosophy is seen as a good choice, and politics would be good for the degree you want to do. What other A-levels are you interested in other than business studies and product design?
Maths would be a good choice for a management related degree.

Thanks, if I change business to economics, but keep product design (purely because I love it and am good at it) than that should be ok, as that's only 1 "soft subject" ??

Yeah that should be okay, you would have 2 'strong subjects' (economics and philosophy). Politics is suitable normally as a third A-level. Just make sure you get good grades at AS, and you should have a good chance of getting into any university you choose.

btw ever thought about doing a PPE degree?

    Hey
I don't know much about a PPE degree, but it is a degree where you can do politics, philosophy and economics.

Careers in politics, accounting, business, media and academia, etc
David Cameron has a degree in PPE from Oxford!
Probably best to do some research on it, if you are seriously considering it.

Do you have a GCSE in Business? If you have then Economics won't be entirely new to you, and if not, a guy in my class got an A never having done Business or Economics before. It's a subject where the effort that you put in on the course counts for a lot more than the preparation you go into it with.
