Great WorksI'm completely addicted to:
Mozart's requiem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHbgt3e-TC8
Verdi's requiem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsZEv7kAllo
Mendelssohn's Elijah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBMTzryAnrk
So can anyone recommend some other great works?

Re: Great WorksAnything that's choral and epic, the sort of thing that you listen to and think, "I just have to buy the score!"(Original post by schenker)
Works of a similar style? Or just other great works?
Oh, and regarding Elijah - Look out for a new recording coming out by the Gabrieli Consort & Players, it's going to be awesome
I heard a prom of Bach's B Minor Mass the other day, and I'd say that qualifies
You wouldn't believe it, but I'd just started listening to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...maninov_Piano/ when I saw this!(Original post by Foxydelic54)

As far as piano concerti are concerned, it's got to be Rachmaninov and Grieg for definite.
By the way, Knutsford is my second home -- or at least Tatton Park is
Thanks!(Original post by Fingersmith)
If you like Requiems, try Brahms, Faure and Durufle -
Re: Great WorksTry Shostakovich's 2nd Piano Concerto, it's fantastic.(Original post by placenta medicae talpae)

Re: Great WorksThanks! Quite a playful concerto, which I've heard loads before, but never been able to attach a name to.
They're doing the complete Beethoven piano sonatas on the Proms at the moment, if you're interested?
I also noticed from your signature that you're into languages in music.
Do you know any Scots Gaelic?
I've started to learn some this vacation, and it's an awesome language!
I've now listened to the whole work (available here) and I completely agree with you!(Original post by j.alexanderh)
Epic and choral you say? Can't do better than the Berlioz Requiem. And if you like following the scores as well...
Now to buy the score and run it over and over ...

Re: Great WorksYes! I heard this a while ago and just thought, wow(Original post by j.alexanderh)
And (IMO) the king of large scale choral works - Beethoven's Missa Solemnis:

Re: Great WorksI didn't know that about the Beethoven sonatas! May need to listen to them, Beethoven is one of all-time favourites. I loved the Beethoven symphony cycle that was done at the Proms a few weeks ago.(Original post by placenta medicae talpae)

I know odd words in Gaelic but nothing spectacular, and don't get me started on how to spell the few words and phrases I do know.
It was compulsory in our primary school for the first five years (then we switched over to French), so I mainly remember useless stuff like "yellow" and "frog". The most useful things I know are "what's your name?" and "my name is...". I do like the sound of the language, even though it's not widely spoken (that could be because I've got a bit of a Brave obsession at the moment). To be honest though I am much more of a Romance languages person.

Thanks everyone else for the suggestions too
Top-quality music pretty much 24:7 at the moment with the proms
