Is This An OK Plan For the Next Decade? (Why I Have To Do GEM)
I've wanted to do Medicine since I can remember. Unfortunately due to personal circumstances I didnt get the all the A Level choices I wanted at my sixth form. I chose:
    • Mathematics
    • Further Mathematics
    • Chemistry
    • Drama
    • ICT (Back Up)

However due to these circumstances I ended up not joining school till start of november. Thus I only got maths and further maths. I went to my head of sixth form and I got all my science teachers to sign a petition to get me into A Level chemistry. However the head of science still didn't let me in. Instead because I can't just do two subjects I was put into BTEC National Applied Science (equivalent to 2 A Levels). At the time I thought this would have to do and everything will be fine. However I didn't know until I started researching universities in Februaury that the BTEC is acceptable for all universities except for Medicine. So (finally after this long rant) this is my plan (academia/career) for life:

    1. Do Biomedicine/Biomedical Sciences
    2. Get a 2i or 1st
    3. Apply for Grauate Entry Medicine
    4. Become a Junior Doctor
    5. Specialise in Pedeactrics
    6. Live a Happy Life
    7. Retire Knowing I've done What I Always Wanted

So what do you think? Is there any other way.

Also I'm predicted AA and two Distinctions

    So any advice is grateful!!

So what do you think? Is there any other way. I could probably fund the 5 year course as I will get roughly £8k a year maintenance loan/grant. This is because on my dads wage slip, contract, etc it says he only earns £8,500 a year, and my mum doesn't work. Plus I have to younger siblings. (He actually earns about £45,000).

Also I'm predicted AA and two Distinctions

You've openly admitted on a public forum that your Father commits fraud.

Can't you apply to 6 year foundation medicine courses?

Why don't you take a gap year after completing Maths, Further Maths, and your BTEC and in your gap year sit Chemistry and Biology A levels? It wouldn't be too hard to sit 2 A levels in a gap year if you want to get into Medicine so badly as you say you do. You could probably teach yourself the first AS modules over summer, then learn the rest in time to sit both AS exams in January, then sit both A2 exams in June. If you don't do anything but study Chemistry and Biology in that year then I see no problem in at least attempting it.

Then you will end up with A levels in Maths, F.Maths, Chemistry and Biology. If you could I'd drop the F.Maths because some medical schools look at Maths and F.Maths as one A level, not 2. Then you would have more time to concentrate on Chemistry and Biology.

Or, why can't you just move 6th form colleges and start your A levels again. Choose Chemistry, Biology, and one other subject which you could complete in the standard 2 years.

From friends' experiences getting onto Medicine from Biomedical Sciences in incredibly competitive because it's a common choice for those who don't get the grades for medicine at A level and there are generally fewer postgrad places than undergrad places.

Are your college not letting you do it because your GCSE grades for Chemistry and Biology don't meet their requirements? As someone else has suggested, you could always change colleges and find one that will allow you to do Chemistry and Biology. Even as a graduate applicant, some universities still want you to have Chemistry and Biology at Alevel.

Someone on the Dentistry forum has a 2.1 in Neuroscience, and ABB at Alevel (Biology, Psychology and Business) and ended up with 4 rejections from the graduate courses because they still wanted at least Chemistry and Biology to AS level in addition to the degree.

I did Biomedical Science and I'll tell you now it's not the easiest of degrees to do. There's a lot of hard work involved and the job prospects are not great if you fail to get into medical school as a graduate.

£8000 won't even cover your fees, let alone living costs in London. As a graduate on a five year course, you won't be getting a tuition fee loan. So unless you have 4x£9K available, it's not really a feasible option. You should look primarily at GEPs.

Your plan could work, but that depends on if universities accept BTECs instead of A levels for biomed degrees.

This is why I hate the tuition fee funding scheme sometimes

I think you've been sadly misinformed. My own alma mater (QMUL) doesn't accept it, for one. I'd also be very surprised if the likes of Imperial, UCL, etc do either.

Thinking about it too far in advance, I mean for one you might hate kids when you start placement.

Who would bother working for 8500K a year.

He has had the same contract for 25 years. And he was only 16 when he and his boss founded the company, thus this was a lot of money back then, especially at that age.

I think this sounds like he's paying himself minimum wage and then the rest in dividends to avoid tax tut tut tut, people like that screw up society.

He doesn't make his wage slip. His boss does. it just if he goes redundant, the boss doesn't have to pay a lot out

Unless your father is paid in dividends, has another pay cheque or paid in benefits in kind... He and his employer must be committing tax evasion. That's a hefty criminal charge, right there. And no matter what Jimmy Carr may think, it's not funny. And please don't defraud SFE. It's hard enough for those with genuine claims as it is.

    Anyway.

I'd recommend you see if any uni will accept A levels sat next year. Pay for them yourself--much cheaper than an extra degree.
