Question for Muslims - how old were you when you finished the Qur'an?
I'm 16 and ashamed to admit that I haven't even finished reading the arabic version of the Qur'an. I definitely will finish it this Ramadhan though. What about everyone else?

I read the Koran from cover to cover when I was 14 in about three months. I'm not even a Muslim; just interested in religion generally. It amazes me that people can call themselves Muslim when they have never read the Koran, or Christians without having read the Bible.

Yeah sure you did. Just because I haven't read every single word that doesn't mean I don't know anything about Islam.

I did; shocking that some people actually read, isn't it? No, but a large part of your faith is centred around the Koran. I'd think if it was that important to you you'd have read it by now.

And thanks for the worthless neg; have a nice, juicy -7 neg right back.

Yeah I figured that was you. It is important to me which is why I'm determined to finish it the summer. I'm assuming you read the English translation. Yeah, well Muslims are supposed to read the arabic translation first which isn't easy if you don't know it well. Needless to say, I've still read the most important surah's of the Qur'an.

I'm going to be 20 in august and I haven't completed the Qur'an yet, I started reading very late and the teacher changed every 6-7 months each saying the previous teacher taught me incorrectly so I had to keep starting again then I wasn't taught for about for 2 years at all :/ I'm making some progress now

Well that's good. I've never had teachers, only my mum to help me read. That's probably why I haven't finished - she's always busy.

If I had the teacher I have now I would have finished ages ago >.< but anyway in some ways its good to still be learning the qura'n I know a lot of people who finished at age 13-14 and haven't read it since and end up forgetting what they learnt and with age comes better understanding of Tajweed

I first sat down and read the Qur'an at around 10... I didn't really know the context and real meaning behind it though, so around 15, I read it again - this time trying to be as objective and critical as possible.

It's definitely worth reading in Arabic if you've got the time. Nicely written book, but not for me religious-wise.

That's an interesting point, I haven't thought of that before.

So the indoctrination starts early in Islam. Interesting.

Personally I find it a joke that many, many people read the book in in Arabic when they can't even understand it.

No, but I get my mum to translate what I've just read to me.

It's much harder for us, because we have to read it in a language that isn't our first or second language (this applies to non-Arabs I suppose). Still it shouldn't be too bad if you learn the alphabet when you're young.

Someone asked how a person who has not read the Qur'an can call themselves Muslim?

What about the number of Muslims in the middle east that are illiterate? That's not my suggesting foreign people are stupid or trying to be offensive.

Its me asking a question based on my experiences, in Afghanistan i met many people that followed Islam that could not read or write in Pashtu let alone Arabic. Though they all owned Qur'ans from what i understand they were used more as a talisman or artifact than as reading material.

Albeit it would make more sense to read it in English first; you have to know what you're reading.
