    Running with urinary incontinence...
I've suffered with urinary incontinence all my life but I really need to improve my fitness. My brother has just started running and I think it would be good for us to do it together so that we can motivate one another and stuff.

What can I do to prevent leaking through to my shorts? I do have stress incontinence so I will be expecting sudden gushes, but apart from wearing pads, is there anything else I can do?

    All responses will be appreciated!

Aside from pads or those 'nappy' type things theres not much unless theres some medical thing you can have done?

I saw a medical programme where a lady had urinary incontinence and she had an operation on her urethra to stop it. It worked and she was able to lead a normal life afterwards so it might be worth looking into. Until then I guess you could wear the pads?

Fear not! Help is at hand and it is simple, quick and effective. Nearly half of all women suffer from stress incontinence but the ignorance about the causes and the cures is appalling.

Get the college GP to prescribe the PelvicToner. It is the only pelvic floor exerciser proven in clinical trials that is available on prescription. It helps you exercise properly and over 80% over women say it cures the problem in abou 2 - 4 weeks. It also does wonders for your sex life!!

If you want more infor then search PelvicToner (all one word) on Google and click the .co.uk site. I'm doing this because most blogs don't allow hyperlinks.

Good luck, you'll be running dry in no time

It's almost always possible to cure urinary incontinence - if it just occurs on rare occasions you might decide you're not bothered, but there's absolutely no need to suffer in silence if it's something that occurs frequently.

What have you tried so far? As suggested above, the first step I'd suggest would be pelvic floor exercises, with or without a device to help.

Weight loss can help (although of course there may be the exercise incontinence issue to deal with at first), and if you smoke it can help your incontinence if you stop.

If these don't stop the problem, you could have some tests to make sure your bladder is working properly (if there's an element of bladder overactivity that can be treated too).

Surgery is highly likely to help, but it probably won't be offered until you've tried all the non-surgical measures first.

Thank you for all the replies!

I have been seeing a physiotherapist but apparently, my pelvic floor muscles do not relax, they just keep contracting. She gave me these new exercises to do, but because my vagina is too tight, I was in pain while doing the exercises, even with anaesthetic gel.

I'm not considered overweight and I don't smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs.

I had x-rays taken of my bladder but I don't really know the results of that. I am on the waiting list to see a gynaecologist. I've had tablets for overactive bladders but they haven't helped.
