    Background Reading
    Hi there,

I'm hoping to study Politics with international relations at university (entry in 2013) and I was wondering if anybody could recommend me some background reading that I could do over the summer.
I've got a few boring days at my grans this week so it would be great if I could get some books by then!

A mix of straight politics and a bit of international relations would be ideal if possible

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thucydides is always a winner. Funeral Oration should set you up nicely.

    For IR:

Ken Waltz - Everything you can
James Fearon - on Rationalist Explanations for War (probably the most important IR paper there is).
David A. Lake and Robert Powell - Strategic Choice and IR
    Alex Wendt - Constructivist stuff
Robert Jervis - Perception and Misperception in International Politics
Stathis Kalyvas - Logic of Violence in Civil War

Globalisation of World Politics is a very good one. It was the first book I bought when I started studying politics and IR 7 years ago. There are hundreds of books that deals with politics and IR. Look for an introduction to IR books, it would introduce you to different theories and concepts of IR: realism, liberalism, feminism, postmodernism, constructivism etc
