Re: State visit from the MUN Rep for Uruguay
Mr Speaker, the Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman would like to welcome Uruguay to the MHoC. We would like to know if Uruguay has any plans on joining the World Free Trade Treaty once it has been finalised?

Re: State visit from the MUN Rep for UruguayUruguay will consider joining the World Free Trade Treaty when it is finalised. As far as we know, the EU is debating the issue currently.(Original post by stanlas)

Re: State visit from the MUN Rep for UruguayUruguay is indeed a member of UNASUR. The ultimate goal would be some sort of political union. We believe this would work better than in South America than other areas, for example Europe, where there are many conflicting cultures and languages (take a look at what happened to Austria-Hungary, for example).(Original post by Rakas21)
As a member of the South American customs union (i think), does Uruguay share the goal of eventual political union with other nations.
Unfortunately, we do not think that the 'political union' would come into effect within the foreseeable future. -
Re: State visit from the MUN Rep for UruguayMr Speaker, the MHoC does not agree with the Syrian authorities attacking their own citizens and we firmly believe that one can not compare the situation in Syria to the situation in the vicinity of the Falkland islands. The islanders are being bullied. Their access to the world is being cut by ships flying the Falklands flag being refused permission to dock at certain South American ports.(Original post by Cmmah)
Having recently expelled the Syrian ambassador to Britain, and being part of an MUN resolution that includes plans to boycott Iran and Russia, the MHoC cannot accuse Argentina of 'bullying' the islanders, just because they don't agree with them being under British sovereignty. (OOC: Given that, Uruguay is also part of this resolution. I even wrote it
)
After all, why would 'bullying' the islanders make sense? Would the islanders want to be under Argentinean rule, when Argentina has bullied them in the past?
As we said, if a yes vote were to come back from the islanders, Uruguay would have to seriously reconsider our position. This would involve taking into account the conditions under which the vote was held, Britain and Argentina's behaviour during the course of the campaign, and many other factors. So until such a vote takes place, we cannot say for certain.
With regards to the vote, we welcome this reconsideration after the vote. However, we hope that these are not empty words.
Mr Speaker, could the representative for Uruguay state what their stance is on the situation in Syria? -
Re: State visit from the MUN Rep for Uruguay
Mr Speaker, would the Uruguayian visitor care to comment on my proposal for a statue of Diego Forlan outside the Etihad Stadium in Manchester to recognise the pleasure that his stay in Manchester a few years ago gave to the supporters of Manchester City FC?

Re: State visit from the MUN Rep for UruguayAs we said in another post, we are going to review the closing of our own ports to Falklands ships, and we will not support a trade blockade of the islands. We cannot control what our neighbours do, but we do not believe that the islanders are being 'bullied'.(Original post by toronto353)

As for our stance on Syria, as we have repeated many times in the MUN, and have already touched on during this visit, we strongly oppose the al-Assad regime and those who support it. We were part of the recent resolution, which is being reviewed by the SC.
The government being the sole provider has many advantages.(Original post by Lipvig)
If I may ask, why does the government of Uruguay believe it should be the sole provider of marijuana?
We can keep closer tabs on the 40 cigarettes a month limit. It stops others from profiting from the sale of marijuana which in turn, reduces the amount of 'drug gangs' and prevents the likelihood of Uruguayan drug wars that some South American countries are so notorious for.
Go ahead. If it'll raise awareness of a Uruguayan talent abroad, it can't be a bad thing.(Original post by barnetlad)
