Newbie and hoping to get into uni
Hi there i recently applied to UCLAN for ba social work. I have worked in various childcare settings and now reached a stage where i want to further my career. I found out there was still places at this uni so applied and still not heard anything. I am now exploring other options just in case as i am totally ready for study again. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as i hopefully will be a mature student soon.

Re: Newbie and hoping to get into uni
hi there, lou. welcome

before u applied to UCLAN did u spk to the admissions team for SW by any chance?
just to add - u have said u are exploring other options but not said what those may be...some more detail would be appreciated, unless of course, u have heard from UCLAN since the time u made this thread!

Re: Newbie and hoping to get into uni
Hi and thankyou.
No i spoke to admissions team from UCLAN as it is the nearest one to me and i will be travelling back and forth. I am a parent so need to be at this uni if possible. My other options are open university but need to find a job in this sector so my employer will support and sponser me. Im just waiting to see if i can volunteer one day a week.
Thanks

Re: Newbie and hoping to get into uni
what did they say with respect to your application, lou? it's just that they tend to like evidence of recent study but, it may be that u will be ok if your level of experience is acceptable to them.
i do know that it's pretty difficult to go the sponsorship route, primarily because it's so competitive... usually cos those sorta roles are few n far between.
without all the facts, it's sounding as tho your better bet would be to do an access course, before u consider applying for the degree...something that is humanities/social sciences/social work based - this would give u evidence of recent study and alongside u could volunteer (which is what i did as well) - then again, this advice is based on my own experiences and it could well be that u will be ok cos UCLAN will put u through to 2nd stage

If you applied after the 30/06 then your application will not have been sent to the university as it will be placed automatically into clearing.
Good luck.Last edited by evening sunrise; 16-07-2012 at 07:43. -
Re: Newbie and hoping to get into uni
Hi guys
thanks very much for all the help. I applied before the 30/6 and still waiting. I would do an access course but i have completed a n.n.e.b (apparantly equivalent to nvq3) and various other training courses so i don't want to repeat anything or be doing similar courses. I have heard nothing back regarding application but i would say i have alot of experience within this area. I have worked in various childcare settings and also a support/outreach worker for my local surestart.
I have wanted to do it for a while but have mentally not been ready (as i know it will be challenging) so now i am ready i am feeling deflated as i haven't heard anything. Any career advisors say that i am best to go for this course.
Thanks for all your help

Re: Newbie and hoping to get into uni
Don't get disheartened, unfortunately the admin side of university can be a little slow at times. As eveningsunrise said they have to give a decision by the 19th of July, otherwise the UCAS automatically updates to unsuccessful. This also happens if you do not accept or reject an offer, UCAS then stays unchanged until clearing opens. So keep checking just in case you get a late decision, you will need to accept quickly. But this does not prevent you from opening up a dialog with the university.
This doesn't mean you are not suitable for the course, it could just be that the relevant person is not available to assess your application. It may also be department policy to consider any unresolved application after a certain date through clearing. If that is the case get ready for 16th August when I believe clearing opens this year and call the university direct. The right people will be in place to make decisions. At the moment many are on holiday or involved in meetings. -
