    Want to travel somewhere obscure?
    Hey TSR!

I was just interested in the obscure locations you wanted to travel to one day I love travel and someday hope to visit every country in the world :moon:

My current fascination is cold wildernesses. I just think it looks so incredible in pictures and it's isolation means it is untroubled by human development and also the people that live there have interesting ways of dealing with their harsh environment.

My travel hit list at the moment is:

    Svalbard, Norway
    pictures to be added

    Kamchatka, Russia

    South Georgia
    pictures to be added

    Greenland
    pictures to be added

    Alaska, USA
    pictures to be added

    So what about you, TSR?

For the last (roughly) 14 years I've wanted to go to Easter Island. Still holding on to that dream, it will happen

Somewhere in central or south america, maybe Costa Rica or Peru.

But I'd also love to go Russia, Prague and go back to Mostar, Bosnia.

I also am fascinated with the cold wilderness you described. Especially Svalbard and northern Russia is tempting, the pure remoteness from any civilization and the harsh conditions fascinate me.

I've just come back from Cuba. Communist countries get a bad press although I do think that Cubas probably the safest/freindliest of them. Plus lots of people speak english there as their education system is so good, so it doesn't matter if you can't speak much spanish. There's some great scener and excelent snorkelling/diving spots.

Re: Want to travel somewhere obscure?
I pretty much want to go everywhere, with very few exceptions.

However, I accept that some places are likely to be outside my budget for a considerable time (Papua New Guinea/Antarctica/Kamchatka/the Aleutian Islands etc.)

In terms of places which are slightly more realistic, my interests are mainly in the Former Soviet Union and also the French and Portuguese speaking countries of Africa (particularly Central Africa).

The most obscure country I have been to is Tajikistan. This year I will likely go to the breakaway 'country' of Abkhazia (in Georgia). I have Guinea-Bissau, Congo, Gabon and Sao Tome e Principe on my 'must do' list but airfares to Africa tend to be very expensive. I hope to visit one of these in 2014 (probably Guinea-Bissau if it is still safe).

Got to agree about the far Northern wildernesses; they're amazing. Plus of course the Aurora Borealis :yep:.

Other places on my hitlist are:
    • Peru
    • Faroe Islands (Complete my Scandinavian Tour)
    • Cambodia
    • Angola

For Kamchatka you need a special permit.

But just take the Transsiberian railway in winter, and much of what you see will be a cold wilderness. Lake Baikal is frozen at this time of year and is able to take the weight of vehicles, now that would be a frozen wilderness...

I've always wanted to see the wildlife of Madagascar.
It's wonderful- nothing 'big' there (apart from sharks and crocodiles!) but the uniqueness of the wildlife makes seeing it feel very special. Plus the fact that the landscape is so degraded it makes it a miracle there is any habitat left for them at all. You really would need months to see it all- I only had two weeks but a glimpse was better than nothing.

However, while many people (like me) went for the wildlife, the abiding impression I have now is how friendly the people are and how interesting their culture is. Madagascar really is a great country, I would love to go back- but just be aware that travelling in some degree of comfort there while sticking to a budget can be tough.

I remember a few years ago when I got my world map I got fascinated with all the tiny islands in the South Pacific like Fiji, Polynesia, Micronesia etc. I'd love to go to one of them, I bet so many of them are completely untouched.

I really like the idea of going on the Wikitravel site, clicking on "Random Page" and then going there. Travelling to a place in that way seems so exciting, leaving it up to fate like that would be awesome

Greenland and Antarctica, because they (especially Antarctica) contain ice caves, which are aesthetically the best structures on the planet imo.

I'd love to travel similar places the OP posted. Especially northern Scandinavia - places like Svalbard or Finnmark. Northern Sweden. Russia too. I also want to see the ancient middle Eastern sites, like Petra or Damascus. Greenland too looks like an interesting place aswell, but must be so hard to access and tour around.
