Re: The UKCAT: they DO give you scrap paper, right? Thanks, can you ask for extra before you go into the exam?(Original post by je t'aime)
Permanent- you have to keep asking for anther board- so remember to ask during the change over between sections.
It's honestly not as scary as people make out- good luck
I guess I'll write small and ask during the 1 minute breaks.
Are you allowed to take bottle tap water into the room? -
Re: The UKCAT: they DO give you scrap paper, right?Umm I think I was given two boards at the beginning and sorry have no idea about water- I would guess not as it would be awful if it spilt over the computers but you'll have to ring and check with the centre.(Original post by mirror+probe)

Re: The UKCAT: they DO give you scrap paper, right?
You don't get scrap paper, you get a whiteboard and marker. Check that it works before the timer starts, and check you have supplies of tissue to clean it.
You cannot take any food or drink into the exam, not even water.
Allegedly, you can ask for a manual calculator instead of using the standard on-screen calculator. However it is likely to be a random model whose layout you could be unfamiliar with - leave yourself time to familiarise with it, and check that it works before the timer starts. I've also heard rumours that manual calculators weren't available at a local centre, so practice with the onscreen version beforehand.
The UKCAT website has a page called "The Test Room" (under "Taking The Test") which addresses these and similar issues. -
Re: The UKCAT: they DO give you scrap paper, right?Someone asked UKCAT on Twitter if a handheld calculator was allowed, they said no. It's not good if some test centres are giving them out, this is supposed to be a standardised test.(Original post by Pastaferian)

Re: The UKCAT: they DO give you scrap paper, right? You ask for more by putting your hand up.(Original post by itslikeanna)
Wait so basically you have a whiteboard and a permanent pen for all four sections of the UKCAT? -
Re: The UKCAT: they DO give you scrap paper, right? You cannot take your own calculator into the test, that's clear. Presumably this is an anti-cheating measure.(Original post by NoreenK)
Someone asked UKCAT on Twitter if a handheld calculator was allowed, they said no. It's not good if some test centres are giving them out, this is supposed to be a standardised test.
The advice about them giving out handheld calculators on request was confirmed by the UKCAT call centre earlier this week. But, like I said, I've heard rumours that manual calculators weren't available at a local centre, despite what the call centre had advised. -
Re: The UKCAT: they DO give you scrap paper, right?Yep but you can ask for a new whiteboard whenever or even beg for two at the beginning. Honestly it's not so bad(Original post by itslikeanna)

Despite the advice from the helpline, no calculator was offered at the PearsonVue test centre in Holborn, London. And that's probably their largest test centre. But I'd familiarised with the onscreen calculator by then.
Three double-sided whiteboards with markers were given out. You could ask for more, but three was plenty.Last edited by Pastaferian; 31-07-2012 at 16:57.
