This has made a lot of physicists very happy while the Chemists and Biologists sat around developing new cancer treatments and wondering why the essentially useless science gets all the government funding.
When einstein came up with the theory of lazers no one had any idea's of how it could possibly used, now look at it. Same with microwaves
Just because we don't know any uses yet don't mean in 60years we won't look back thinking that that was obvious and why didn't we think of that use before. -
Re: Whats happened in the last two weeks?I'm all in favour of pure scientific research (though you'll find einstiens thought experiments ran at a slightly better cost/return than the over £6bn LHC), but I'd still preferentially fund immediate application research when government research money is in short supply.(Original post by lbsf1)

As a separate point, doing the research for this post lead me to discover that one of the largest and most expensive scientific projects currently working costs between 1/2 and 1/4 of the cost of the UK hosting the Olympic games. Am I alone in being a little depressed at the apparent priorities of our society?
Oh and Lasers has an s not a z. This is one Americanism I will not tolerate, as laser is actually L.A.S.E.R, standing for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Unless of course you were spelling it Ztimulated, in which case I apologise.Last edited by chrisawhitmore; 13-07-2012 at 00:28. -
Re: Whats happened in the last two weeks? But does that mean they would be willing to meet some strangers they talked to over the Internet?(Original post by Psyk)
Yeah, believe it or not, the people who post on here are mostly actual real people. Many of whom are actually real life females.

Re: Whats happened in the last two weeks?Well the ones I met obviously were. People from forums meet up all the time. It's not really unusual.(Original post by Juichiro)
