    Demoralised.
So I'm meant to be teaching myself the year's work over the holidays (I'm in university). I'm finding it incredibly hard to study - I don't think I've done any reading in about a month - and I think I now know why.

So today I read through one topic of one module, the same topic I'd read a month ago, and every time I turned the page I thought WTF. Just pages and pages of obscene matrices and loads and loads of steps. I have no idea if I have to memorise everything, or some of the content, or if I'm expected to rattle through all the steps in an exam. But this one topic has totally put me off studying (once again); it's made everything feel impossible.

I'm planning to email my lecturer with my questions when I've finished reading the final topic for this module, but I don't know how I can motivate myself to continue with my other modules in the meantime, because time's running out.

    Any suggestions? :cry2:

Maybe you should go up north so you can feel more positive about it

    Spoiler:

**** that was so bad and probably scientifically inaccurate too. I think the north pole is negative right now.

Do you have any friends that can explain it to you?

    Hm.

I can only suggest a cliché... have you tried listening to music? "I'll make a man out of you" from Mulan is quite motivating.

Have you got a goal in life? Not like a "I"m the reincarnation of Jesus" or "I will become Captain of the England Football team" or "I will make Stephen Fry laugh" or "I will make a carpet out of silk worm vomit because I can" or "I will be the hero that the world deserves".. Sorry. I mean, get yourself a real mean Samuel L. Jackson army voice to yell at you in your head. That works for me.

Going back to the goal thing..what do you want? Then convince yourself that doing this work will mean you'll get the thing you want. If you don't understand the work I guess there's not much you can do until the prof replies, but go easy on yourself.

The world is scary enough without putting extra pressure on yourself (the mini Samuel L. Jackson could transform into a softer spoken Sean Connery "Pull yourself together. I love you, wee love you, you can do this shon. Don't let anybody think that'sh not true.")

Thank you for a reply I can relate to, because Samuel L. Jackson is my dad. Do you mean an academic goal? The only one I can think of is "I want to get a first" because... well I've gotten one for the previous 2 years and it would just annoy me if I did worse!

Aside from that, part of me does want to study and understand everything. It's just this topic - and the fact that I've done so little work this year - has severely knocked my confidence. So there is a gulf, between my goal, and my will, you could say. Regarding what I read today, I understand it, but I don't know if I need to memorise it because it's a bit ridiculous. Maybe I should check the formula sheet... :holmes:

    What's the topic
FEA - Higher order elements. It pulls shape functions out of absolutely nowhere and the matrices are genuinely scary

I have capricious depression hither and thither.

What I'd exhort you to do, is for two-four days, don't attempt any work/effort/industrious studying. Just relax and be in repose. If needs be, just sit outside for hours on end and assuage yourself.

Sometimes our cerebrum just needs nature as a tranquilliser to becalm our predicaments. It's always assisted me. I hope whatever happens, you recuperate from your current plight and are relieved! I'm not at University/College, but if there's anything else you require, even if it's someone to tattle with, I'm here, and I'm sure many people on TSR are here as well to be your "aide-de-camps"!

I've been doing that for 3 weeks

I'll take today off as I'm going somewhere with a friend, hopefully that will help :p:

Well, I should be studying Maths as well, but I've opted for "anatomizing" Jeeves and Wooster.

    Enjoy your day, Sir!

That is a pretty goal. Especially since you've already achieved two thirds of it (kind of). If you feel that strongly about it, I'm sure this googy feeling will leave you alone in time for you to take a level in awesome and totally kick

That's difficult to deal with. Do you think about how your academic life is going all the time? These last few weeks if you've managed to think about other stuff and have fun etc..maybe doing anything you can to crack down on yourself. Try starting with the basics of the complicated thing and work very slowly upwards.

Draw diagrams and stuff. Does your book mention the Galerkin method? If you go through that will it help you with the FEA?

    Re: Demoralised.
    Just Googled it:

FEM is applied in the following manner:

    1. Identify the problem, sketch the structure and loads.
    2. Create the geometry with the FE package solid modeler or a CAD system.
    3. Mesh the model.
    4. Apply boundary conditions (constraints and loads) on the model.
    5. Solve numerical equations.
    6. Evaluate the results.

 That tickled me for some reason.

No idea how to help you dude though! Sorry!

I think I understand. I was like that as well during my 3rd year; couldn't study! soo demotivated. Couldn't wait to go for my placement. After I went for my placement and seen the horror of the industries, I couldn't wait to go back to Uni and study! lol. So ironic

Have you youtube it? Maybe there's a lecture about it somewhere on youtube or a tutorial.

If you're board with the place that you're revising, go to a cafe or any place 'new' and study there. It helped me loads

Yes, this year has been one that has seen me in more pain and less motivated than any other year :nopity:

I've not found anything yet! Tomorrow I'll go through some related problems (however, the last time I tried to read one, I think I ended up shutting down the computer)... I think the situation in general has improved slightly since yesterday.

A couple of days ago, I unpacked everything in my room so there's lots of space there. The incident in the OP was the first time I'd tried working in my room, and I think it's the best as it's far away from any sort of distraction like a door or a window or a TV (but there is my laptop :wink2:)

Yes, I'd say my work rate is of great concern to me, and is often on my mind. For the few weeks I've been at home, I've had a certain amount of fun, but the overwhelming quantity of work has always been weighing me down

I have a couple of textbooks, but neither of them have addressed where the shape functions come from - if I'm expected to derive them, I'm ****ed. I'll have to continue looking for a good explanation, when I get round to doing some work, but who knows when that will be (maybe tomorrow)?

I've just had a look at the formula sheet and most of the matrices are there, so I don't think I have to memorise them :adore: However, the biggest ones aren't there. I'm assuming this is something extra provided for additional background knowledge, but I will surely email my lecturer when I have finished this module. Since I started typing this, my will to work has really improved. Thank you! :top:
