People should be made to quit smoking?
Someone told me the other day 'people should be made to quit smoking'.
And I think I might agree because quite frankly they are no good to anyone-(As far as I know)
I can only think of disadvantages to cigarettes and not one single benefit.
-They kill the people who smoke them
-They are addictive and people become dependant on them
-They kill people who don't smoke (which is unfair)
-This are dangerous to small children and toddlers (which is once again, not fair)
-Poorer people who are addicted are wasting a lot of their money on them and it's not their fault
-It makes the users have yellow teeth, cough a lot and become on the whole a lot less attractive
-it stinks to the high heavens!
I would like to be able to walk around the high streets without deadly cigarette smoke being blown into my face by the person in front of me.
As a non-smoker I am unaware of any potential benefits to smoking things that will kill you and everything around you. If there are any, I will be very shocked.
Any opinions? -
Re: People should be made to quit smoking? You're right, but it won't be banned because cigarettes bring in more tax money than is spent on (directly?) smoking related diseases so on the whole make it easier for the government to balance the books (well, get closer to balancing the books).(Original post by niareb)

Re: People should be made to quit smoking?
Cl-steel mentioned something to me in a smoking thread about smoking being able to help prevent Alzheimers I think.
But no I will not start smoking again no matter what it is alleged to help.
Does more harm than good as far as I am concerned.
But we don't have a say in the pollution of the air we breath so, well I suppose we do have a say but nothing would be done about it, at least smokers have a choice.
I would prefer to walk in an area with very low traffic levels and few factories in the vicinity (county) and loads of smokers, at least you can dodge smokers.Last edited by SubAtomic; 11-07-2012 at 21:52. -
Re: People should be made to quit smoking? It's entirely their fault, people know what it does but still do it anyway.(Original post by niareb)

Who am I to say people can't smoke though, people enjoy it, so it's their choice to make. So long as it doesn't affect me directly, I don't really care. I think banning smoking in public places (that aren't outside) was a big step in the right direction.
Banning smoking outright isn't realistic to me though, people will still smoke, they'll just do it illegally. The Government will lose all the money they make off it as well, which they will avoid at all costs, no pun intended

Re: People should be made to quit smoking?I just wish the government would stop hiking up the tax on fuel and put it on cigarettes instead.(Original post by Hopple)

Re: People should be made to quit smoking? Finally, some reason in this thread.(Original post by llessur123)
The state doesn't need to nanny people. It's their body and so it should also be their choice. -

Re: People should be made to quit smoking?Except that there are benefits to alcohol in small quantities.(Original post by Tahooper)
Why should people be made to quit smoking? So I'm guessing you'd also make people quit drinking alcohol too?
I bet you get invited out a lot. -

Re: People should be made to quit smoking?
I'm not a smoker, never have been and dont ever intend to be but i really hate it when other non-smokers get all high and mighty about it with stupid points such as "
- Really OP? what has that got to do with you, how shallow can you get, lets remove someone's human rights because they should be more physically appealing to you?(Original post by niareb)
-It makes the users have yellow teeth, cough a lot and become on the whole a lot less attractive"
- It is their fault. If they were that poor they wouldn't be able to afford to smoke in the first place, if they want extra money then they should quit - again, nothing to do with you, what they choose to spend their money on is their decision.(Original post by niareb)
-Poorer people who are addicted are wasting a lot of their money on them and it's not their fault
-This is a well known fact, if they choose to smoke and become addicted this is again their own fault and their own decision, their cigarette addiction is none of your business.(Original post by niareb)
-They are addictive and people become dependant on them
So smoking should be made illegal because YOU want it to be so? it's not "blown in your face" unless you voluntarily hang around with douchebags, its not hard to avoid smokers on the stree, walk faster, walk slower or walk around them its not impossible, why should they change an aspect of their lifestyle just to give you an extra 10 seconds convenience?(Original post by niareb)

Yes it can kill them but again thats their choice, the risks are shoved into their face on a daily basis if they choose to carry on then it's their decision, yes i think they should be stopped from smoking around young children who have no choice but to be around it, but for the protection of those of us old enough to simply walk away? seems a little self righteous.Last edited by Care-Free; 11-07-2012 at 22:22. -

Re: People should be made to quit smoking?Several studies (including one I have on a pen-drive somewhere) have found that those who drink one drink a day/every 2 days live longer than both those who drink a lot and those that don't drink at all.(Original post by Iron Lady)
Such as?
